[Treatment Review] My hip caught a cold! Pediatric transient synovitis of the hip!
Hello, this is Sunja 😁
Since it's probably because she's a mother, she brought up issues related to children's health again.
That child lying attached to my leg, exactly 262 weeks ago, five years ago, was the third day I couldn't walk. Now I talk about it with a smile, but at the time, I was extremely worried.
Not only could I not walk, but I couldn't even stand.
At that time, the hospital I visited to see a pediatric orthopedics specialist diagnosed the condition as "hip joint synovitis."
Suddenly unable to walk without any warning signs, I was very scared and confused. I visited a large orthopedic hospital, but unfortunately it was Memorial Day! Because the pediatric specialist was not available, I couldn't even receive proper treatment and just went home. Ah... I feel angry and upset, and after a storm of searching, I found a pediatric orthopedic specialist and vaguely suspected it might be hip joint synovitis.
After the X-ray, there are no other symptoms to worry about on the image, and they confirmed that it is indeed hip joint synovitis. They suggested monitoring for a day or two and prescribed the medication Brufen. If there is no pain, they said it is not necessary to take it.
Two days later, I visited the hospital again. The director asked with a very bright expression, "You're walking well, right?" I replied, "No!"
My director's expression suddenly darkened when I responded, and he suggested we do an ultrasound. He said that hip joint synovitis usually improves in about 3 to 4 days, but if it still persists, we should consider other possible diseases.
Huh? 😨
My spouse and I were momentarily overwhelmed; throughout the ultrasound and waiting for the child's name to be called, I felt so anxious that tears welled up. When we entered the consultation room and sat down, the doctor smiled and said, "It's a relief. There is indeed fluid accumulated in the hip joint," and mentioned that if the symptom hadn't been visible, we should have taken it seriously from that point on.
And the next morning, on the fifth day, I was surprised to see the child casually walking around holding a toy airplane about the size of their own body.
What is this? How come you're walking around as if nothing happened, as if everything was fine until now?
It's a relief, but the four days felt like a dream. Did it really happen? I can't help but find this situation both funny and sad 🤣
The exact reason for transient synovitis is not known. According to the director, there is no specific cause other than having had a cold with a high fever or playing very actively. He simply said that the hip joint has caught a cold.
And I haven't experienced a recurrence so far. It was a fortunate five days because it was transient synovitis 🥹
