Can straight hair turn into curly hair?

I originally had straight hair. But one day, my hair started growing out in curls, and now it's thick and curly. It looks like my hair is pressed down from sleeping poorly. Can straight hair become curly as you age?

I'm a little confused because it can change due to stress or various environmental factors.
