Free delivery costs for cesarean sections starting January 1 next year
It's very nice and good news.
Starting January 1st next year, cesarean delivery medical expenses will be free.
Natural childbirth has no out-of-pocket costs, whereas for cesarean section, the patient bore 5% of the total medical expenses.
C-section surgery can surprisingly be quite costly.
The low birthrate problem is serious, but it has improved in a positive direction~
Cesarean section delivery will be free starting next year.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced today (the 3rd) that a partial amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the National Health Insurance Act was approved at the Cabinet meeting.
Among approximately 227,000 deliveries last year, cesarean sections accounted for 64.3% (146,000 cases), surpassing half of all deliveries.
However, there is no out-of-pocket cost for natural childbirth, whereas patients have been responsible for 5% of the total cost of cesarean section delivery.
Therefore, the government has decided to make the out-of-pocket costs for cesarean section deliveries free starting January 1st next year to support couples who wish to conceive and give birth.
Director Lee Jung-kyu of the Health Insurance Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, "This revision of the enforcement decree is an active measure reflecting the reality of many cesarean deliveries and the on-the-ground voices calling for groundbreaking support for parents who want children."
