10% of diabetes is caused by this... "There's a reason I drink zero-calorie beverages"[Financial News] A study has found that sugar-sweetened beverages such as carbonated drinks and fruit drinks can affect diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

 

On the 7th, Professor Laura Lara-Caster from the University of Washington in the United States and Professor Darish Mozafariyan from Tufts University published a study in the medical journal Nature Medicine analyzing the burden of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases caused by sugar-sweetened beverages across 184 countries worldwide.

 

The effects of sugar-added beverages on health

 

According to the research team's analysis, it was found that worldwide, annually (as of 2020), approximately 2.2 million new cases of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and 1.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are caused by sugar-sweetened beverages. The research team explained that this means about 1 out of every 10 new cases of type 2 diabetes and 1 out of every 30 new cases of cardiovascular disease are attributable to sugar-sweetened beverages.

 

The research team conducted an integrated analysis of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and obesity and diabetes incidence data based on individual-level surveys, estimating the burden of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases caused by sugar-sweetened beverages in 184 countries worldwide for the years 1990 and 2020.

 

As a result, it was analyzed that globally in 2020, 2.2 million cases of type 2 diabetes and 1.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease were caused by the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

 

Professor Mozafariyan, a co-corresponding author of the paper, stated, "Sugar-sweetened beverages are widely consumed in middle- and low-income countries, but there is a lack of preparedness to address their long-term health effects." He added, "Especially in Latin American and African countries, more efforts are needed to curb the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages."
