Vasomotor Rhinitis: Why does my nose run every time I eat spicy or hot foods?
Every time I eat spicy or hot food, my nose runs... What is the reason?
Some people experience a runny nose when eating spicy or hot foods. While it often happens temporarily, if you consistently have an excessive amount of nasal discharge to the point of discomfort, you should suspect vasomotor rhinitis.
Vasomotor rhinitis is a non-allergic condition caused by external stimuli, unlike allergic rhinitis which is triggered by pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and other allergens. Vasomotor rhinitis presents symptoms similar to allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion and runny nose. However, symptoms like itching and sneezing are not as severe.
Vasomotor rhinitis is affected not only by spicy or hot foods but also by various stimuli such as ▲strong fragrances like perfumes or cigarette smoke ▲cold air ▲high humidity ▲temperature changes ▲stress. When these stimuli activate the parasympathetic nerves in the nasal cavity, the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa dilate and blood flow increases. This causes excessive mucus secretion, leading to continuous runny nose. In particular, moving from a cold environment to a warm one can cause sudden temperature changes that worsen symptoms. If the nasal passages are narrow, mucus flow can cause severe nasal congestion.
To alleviate the symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, it is important to avoid external stimuli that trigger the condition. Refrain from spicy and hot foods that can irritate the nose, and it is also advisable to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption. On days with high levels of fine dust, it is best to stay indoors. During seasonal changes or cold winter months, protecting the respiratory system with masks and scarves is recommended. If symptoms become severe enough to interfere with daily life, seeking treatment is an option. Administering anticholinergic sprays or steroids can suppress the parasympathetic nervous system and relieve symptoms. If symptoms do not improve with medication, surgery to cut the parasympathetic nerves in the nasal cavity may be performed.
