Every time I moved my jaw and mouth, I heard a clicking sound from my jaw (inside my mouth).
That sound is called temporomandibular joint (jaw joint), which is also a type of jaw disc.
This is a review of symptoms, treatment process, and post-treatment experiences related to temporomandibular joint disorder.
First, let's talk about symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder.
Every time I open my mouth, speak, eat, or yawn, I hear a "click" sound from my jaw. The sound occurs whenever I move my jaw.
One day, the sound suddenly started, and eventually, the frequency of the sound increased gradually.
Especially, every time I opened my mouth to eat, there was a "click" or "crack" sound from my jaw, and since the sound occurred with each bite, it eventually became difficult to eat.
There were times when the noise was so loud that the person next to me could hear and wonder, "What are they saying?"
Suddenly, there was a "click" sound, and it felt as if my jaw had dislocated, so I had to gently touch my jaw with my hand.
It's not really that my jaw is dislocated, but when I open my mouth while eating, it feels like my jawbone shifts back into place.
I was afraid my jaw might dislocate, so I went to the dentist, and they said it was an temporomandibular joint disorder.
At that time, I knew nothing about temporomandibular joint disorder, but I found out that the "clicking sound when opening the mouth" is said to be the first symptom of TMJ disorder.
Treatment methods for temporomandibular joint disorder
It wasn't about medication or dental treatment; it was about wearing a device called a splint, which is an orthodontic appliance.
It looks like a mouthguard worn by wrestlers, doesn't it?
It was really uncomfortable because it was not wrapping the whole thing but just floating slightly in the middle.
I am not using it now that the correction is finished; I am just keeping it.
The cause of temporomandibular joint disorder varies from person to person, but since I had malocclusion and asymmetry, my bone structure was misaligned, which caused clicking sounds in my jaw.
They said that first, stabilization should be achieved with a device called a splint, and then correction should be performed as the second step.
Suddenly, I had to do two types of corrections on a device like a mouthpiece (which also increased the cost), and it was really stressful at the timeㅠㅠ
Can splint and orthodontic treatment completely cure temporomandibular joint symptoms?
Unfortunately, no.
According to the doctor, there is no cure 😐
Correction treatment for temporomandibular joint issues aims to reduce the frequency of clicking sounds and alleviate symptoms; there is no concept of complete cure.
I resigned myself to the fact that my teeth had malocclusion and had no choice but to undergo orthodontic treatment, so I started the braces.
The splint treatment lasted for 6 months, and then I underwent orthodontic treatment.
During orthodontic treatment, even after it was completed, the sound didn't completely disappear as the doctor said, but the frequency of the sounds significantly decreased!
If the clicking sound occurred every time -> how many times a month -> once every few months -> it has decreased to about twice a year.
There is now almost nothing that can be felt as symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder.
If you ignore symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder, they can worsen, so I strongly recommend visiting a dentist if you hear a sound every time you open your mouth.
