Broadcaster Wang Jong-geun (70) revealed his secret to maintaining vascular health.

 

On the 28th, MBN's 'Pill Room' featured Wang Jong-geun and Kim Mi-sook's couple. The couple, who are serious about managing their vascular health, drank a glass of lukewarm water every morning as soon as they woke up. They also brought a blood glucose meter to check their blood sugar levels. Regarding their motivation for maintaining their health, Kim Mi-sook said, "My mother is currently suffering from dementia, but actually about five years ago, she had a mild stroke," and added, "My mother has three conditions: hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes." In response, Wang Jong-geun said, "That's why we regret not managing her vascular health properly when she had the stroke, and we should have taken care of it then, but we overlooked it, which we regret." He continued, "Since then, we started to take our health seriously, realizing that vascular diseases shouldn't be taken lightly." Additionally, Wang Jong-geun and Kim Mi-sook also showed themselves doing foot baths, which are good for blood circulation. Thanks to these lifestyle habits, the couple received a normal diagnosis in their vascular health checkup. The program also explored in detail the health benefits of drinking lukewarm water on an empty stomach and foot baths.

◇ Drinking water on an empty stomach

 

A glass of water in the morning helps increase the volume of blood and lymph fluid, aiding in the smooth elimination of waste products from the body. Since no fluids are consumed during sleep, the body's hydration decreases, impairing blood circulation. To prevent this, it is recommended to drink water first thing upon waking. Especially on an empty stomach in the morning, drinking lukewarm water at around 30 degrees Celsius is advised. Drinking cold water suddenly upon waking can excessively stimulate the autonomic nervous system, potentially causing arrhythmias or other heart issues. Additionally, the body expends unnecessary energy to raise the lowered body temperature caused by cold water. Elderly and frail individuals have a lower basal metabolic rate, so drinking cold water can lower their body temperature and reduce gastric blood flow, possibly decreasing digestive enzyme secretion. It is better to drink warm water rather than cold.

 

Foot bath

 

Foot baths also promote blood circulation and increase metabolic rate. Metabolism refers to all the processes occurring in the body that utilize the nutrients ingested, including burning fat and generating energy. In other words, raising body temperature through foot baths to improve blood circulation also helps prevent obesity. When body temperature rises by 1 degree, biochemical reactions in the body increase by about 10%, making metabolism more active, and good blood circulation accelerates the breakdown of body fat. Foot baths also help alleviate stress by suppressing the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is triggered when stressed. When the sympathetic nervous system is suppressed, the brain releases endorphins that reduce pain, making discomfort less noticeable.

    전 공복에 물은 매일 마시고 있긴 한데요. 제가 아직 젊어서 그런 걸까요? 저는 딱히 큰 효과를 모르겠는데요. 더 나이가 되면 효과가 느껴질 수도 있겠네요.
    칠십대에도 건강하다는 것은 정말 축복입니다. 사진 속 주인공도 칠 십대로 보이긴 하지만 건강해 보이긴 하네요. 요즘은 건강 관리에 모두가 다 관심을 갖고 신경을 쓰는 것 같아요. 또한 공복에 물 마시기 뿐 아니라 족욕도 좋다고 나와있는데, 족욕이 혈액순환이 잘 되게끔 만들어줘서 그런가 보네요. 족욕기도 한때 굉장히 유행했던 걸로 기억하는데요. 사실 족욕기가 없어도 간편하게 할 수 있는 게 족욕이죠. 큰 대야와 뜨거운 물만 있어도 오케이니까요 ㅎㅎ
