According to the police, family, and acquaintances on the 5th, Mr. A, a man in his 50s who was involved in the accident, ran a flower shop during the day and worked as a substitute driver at night to make a living.
The accident site was close to the restaurant area around Cheonggye Mountain and was one of the places where drivers waiting for calls usually gathered.
Mr. A's family said, "Lately, things haven't been going well in Gyeonggi Province, so he was working a second job as a driver for a ride-hailing service," and "It seems he was waiting to do a ride when he had the accident."
The accident occurred around 9:15 p.m. three days ago in front of a convenience store in Sangjeok-dong, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province.
A man in his 60s, B, who had been drinking near the entrance of Cheonggye Mountain hiking trail, drove his Lexus sedan about 3 kilometers and then crashed into the sidewalk, hitting person A. B's vehicle continued to accelerate after hitting A, breaking the glass of an adjacent restaurant and then colliding with the building's exterior wall before coming to a stop. As a result, some of the restaurant's glass and fixtures were damaged.
Mr. A was severely injured on his head and back and was transferred to the hospital, but it is reported that he has not regained consciousness.
At that time, Mr. B's blood alcohol concentration was understood to be at a level of intoxication that warranted license cancellation (above 0.08%).
Seongnam Sujeong Police Station has applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. B on charges of causing injury through dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).
