Died while boiling beef bones... Turns out, it was due to poisoning from using 'this' substance

Attaching a 'tripod cover' to the gas stove was found to pose a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning due to incomplete combustion.

On the 11th, the Korea Consumer Agency and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation announced the results of measuring carbon monoxide levels during combustion after purchasing five types of tripod covers online. Tripod covers are auxiliary devices sold for purposes such as controlling the flame on gas stoves and wind protection.

According to the Consumer Agency's measurements, in four types, carbon monoxide levels exceeding 200ppm, which can cause headaches and loss of judgment within about 3 minutes of lighting the fire, were detected. One of the four types reached a concentration of 12,800ppm, which can be fatal within 3 minutes. The Consumer Agency explained that the tripod cover affects the oxygen for combustion between the gas stove and cooking utensils, leading to incomplete combustion.

However, this demonstration experiment installed a collector on cooking utensils in an enclosed space to measure the carbon monoxide concentration in the air. For this reason, the Consumer Agency explained that it is difficult to determine that there is a direct risk to consumers in environments with good ventilation.

In December 2023, while boiling beef bones with a tripod cover installed on a gas stove, two people died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. In September of last year, two people also died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning while boiling medicinal herbs with a tripod cover on a gas stove.

The Consumer Agency advised seven gas stove manufacturers and sellers to exercise caution when using additional parts such as tripod covers, and to strengthen warnings related to carbon monoxide emissions. Additionally, consumers were urged to ventilate by opening windows when using gas stoves and to be cautious when using additional parts like tripod covers.

The Gas Safety Corporation is planning to review measures to prohibit the use of additional parts not manufactured by the gas stove manufacturer in order to prevent safety accidents.
