Research findings indicate that coffee consumption has a positive effect on overall survival rates but does not influence mortality related to liver disease.

For Koreans, coffee is more than just a preferred beverage. The annual coffee consumption per capita in Korea (as of 2023) is 405 cups, more than double the global average of 152 cups. As many people seek coffee both during busy times and leisure, interest in its health effects has also increased. Consuming 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day can help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. There are also research findings suggesting it reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

The team of Professor Ryu Dam from the Department of Gastroenterology at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital evaluated the effects of coffee consumption on metabolic abnormality fatty liver disease and metabolic alcoholic fatty liver disease using UK Biobank data from the UK. The research team divided 455,870 participants into groups without fatty liver, with metabolic abnormality fatty liver disease, and with metabolic alcoholic fatty liver disease, and further categorized them based on daily coffee intake: 0 cups, 1-2 cups, and 3 or more cups, conducting a large-scale cohort analysis.

Although previous studies suggest that coffee may suppress the progression of liver disease, this study applied inverse probability weighting (IPTW) to analyze only the impact of coffee consumption on survival rates related to liver disease. Inverse probability weighting is a method that assigns greater weights to events with lower probabilities of occurrence and is mainly used to infer causal relationships.

Analysis results showed that, before applying inverse probability weighting, daily consumption of 1 to 2 cups of coffee was associated with improved survival rates related to liver disease in all groups: those without fatty liver, patients with metabolic abnormality-related fatty liver disease, and patients with alcohol-related fatty liver disease.

However, after applying inverse probability weighting, coffee consumption was found not to affect liver disease-related mortality in both the metabolic abnormality fatty liver disease group and the metabolic alcohol-related fatty liver disease group.

Professor Ryu Dam stated, "Coffee consumption has a positive effect on overall survival rates, but does not significantly impact mortality related to liver disease," and added, "This is the result of a more accurate analysis that included additional adjustments for confounding variables in previous studies."

====================

I like coffee.

Drinking 1.2 glasses a day is related to diabetes or high blood pressure.

It helps with prevention.

It's not a definitive treatment method.
