Daejeon elementary school student killer teacher: "I wanted to die together regardless of which child"

On the afternoon of the 10th, an 8-year-old child who was stabbed to death with a weapon wielded by a teacher at an elementary school in Daejeon was confirmed to have disappeared while leaving the after-school care class to go to a private academy. The suspect, Mr. ㄱ (48), told the police, "I tried to die with any child coming out of the after-school care class."

According to the statements from Daejeon Seobu Police Station and Daejeon Office of Education on the 11th, teacher Mr. ㄱ at this school lured 8-year-old Kim Haneul out of a classroom on the second floor around 4:30 PM on the 10th and committed the act inside the audiovisual room's storage closet. Mr. ㄱ stated that the day before, at the hospital before surgery, he told the police, "After buying a knife near the school, I didn't want to stay in the teachers' office, so I was opening the locked door to the second-floor audiovisual room. I was planning to kill any student from the care classroom next to the audiovisual room when they finished their class and left. I told the last child to come into the audiovisual room by giving them a book, then strangled them and stabbed them with a weapon."

On this day, the head of Daejeon Seobu Police Station, in a briefing, estimated that the time ㄱ씨 lured and murdered Haneul-yang was between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM, after leaving the care classroom on the 10th. He explained, "The police received a 112 report from Haneul-yang's mother around 5:15 PM and began location tracking at 5:17 PM, two minutes later, and searched the school and its surroundings." However, the police said, "The location tracking signal was detected near an apartment," and they wasted time searching the nearby apartment.

Haneulyang's father's location was traced inside the school, and around 5:50 PM, Haneulyang's grandmother, who was searching for the child together, discovered Mr. ㄱ and Haneulyang's bag inside the dark storage room of the school's audiovisual room and reported it to the police. When the police arrived, the storage room door was locked, and after breaking the door and entering, they found the two lying on a floor of about 1 to 2 pyeong (approximately 3.3 to 6.6 square meters) bleeding, and they were taken to the hospital. A long, sharp knife was found at the crime scene.

According to police investigation results, Mr. ㄱ was seen leaving the faculty office on the afternoon of the 10th and was later found to have purchased a knife, which appeared to be the weapon, at a kitchenware store about 2 km from the school using his own car. Sky Yang, who was found unconscious, received CPR at the hospital but was pronounced dead at around 6:35 PM. Mr. ㄱ, who sustained serious injuries from self-harm, underwent suturing surgery after confessing to the police.

Choi Jae-mo, Director of Education at Daejeon Office of Education, stated during a briefing on that day, "Around 4:30 PM on the 10th, a caregiver who received a call from the driver of the academy vehicle saw the student off the second-floor classroom. Ten minutes later, the driver contacted the caregiver again, saying 'the child is not coming down,' and also informed the parents. Subsequently, school teachers searched for the student, and at around 4:50 PM, the school informed the parents. Afterward, the parents reported the incident to the police."

Before the surgery, Mr. ㄱ told the police, "I have been receiving treatment for depression since 2018. I thought about suicide while on leave. I got annoyed three days after returning to work. The vice principal prevented me from attending classes," he stated. According to the investigation by the Office of Education, Mr. ㄱ applied for a six-month medical leave at the end of last year due to depression, starting his leave on December 9, but suddenly applied to return to work and resumed his duties on December 30, just 21 days later. Before his medical leave, Mr. ㄱ was a homeroom teacher for 2nd grade, and after returning, he worked as a subject teacher.

Mr. ㄱ displayed violent tendencies, such as destroying his computer, on the 5th, citing slow computer access. Then, on the 6th, he sat in a dark classroom and approached a teacher, grabbing her wrist and choking her while saying, "Let's leave work together, or shall we have a conversation?" The educational support officials from Daejeon Seobu Office of Education, who were informed of this incident, visited the school on the morning of the 10th, the day of the incident, but did not conduct a face-to-face investigation with Mr. ㄱ and instead recommended separating him through leave or other measures. The school placed Mr. ㄱ next to the vice principal in the teachers' office, but ultimately could not prevent the incident.

On the 11th, the police obtained arrest and search warrants for Mr. ㄱ. Additionally, an autopsy of Sky Yang is scheduled to be conducted on the morning of the 12th. The National Assembly Education Committee also decided to hold an emergency inquiry regarding this incident on the 18th.

Meanwhile, the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education decided to provide psychological counseling support for teachers and students suffering from trauma in response to the Sky Yang murder case, and designated the period from this day until the 14th as a mourning period.
