Drinking a glass of water after waking up has many health benefits. However, caution is advised, as drinking cold water can actually worsen your health. Let's explore the benefits of drinking water in the morning and the side effects of drinking cold water.

 

◇Drink a glass of water immediately after waking up to help eliminate waste and control appetite.

Drinking a glass of water immediately after waking up has several health benefits. Drinking water on an empty stomach increases blood and lymph fluid volume, which helps eliminate waste products. It also promotes intestinal movement and stimulates bowel movements. Furthermore, while you sleep, your body loses up to a liter of water through sweat and breathing. This increases blood viscosity, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. Drinking water immediately after waking up reduces blood viscosity, helping prevent these conditions.


Water also helps control appetite. The feeling of fullness after drinking water prevents overeating, as calories are burned when water is digested. Therefore, drinking one or two glasses of water 30 to 15 minutes before a meal fills the stomach and can help alleviate hunger. A study from Virginia Tech found that people who drank two glasses of water 20 minutes before a meal lost approximately 2 kg more than those who didn't.

 

◇Cold water can actually cause digestive problems

 

However, you shouldn't drink cold water immediately after waking up. Sudden cold drinking can overstimulate the autonomic nervous system, potentially leading to cardiac abnormalities like arrhythmia. This is because the body may expend unnecessary energy trying to return to normal body temperature. Elderly individuals, in particular, should be cautious, as drinking cold water when their basal metabolic rate is low can lower body temperature and reduce gastrointestinal blood flow, which can impair digestive juice secretion.

 

After waking up, drink lukewarm water (around 30 degrees Celsius), slightly lower than body temperature, on an empty stomach. It's also best to drink water slowly and at a leisurely pace. Patients with high blood pressure or a history of cerebral aneurysms or cerebral hemorrhages who drink water too quickly can experience a sudden increase in cerebral blood flow, potentially leading to rupture of cerebral blood vessels. It's recommended to drink water slowly, taking at least five minutes.

Meanwhile, it's best to avoid drinking coffee, green tea, and other beverages instead of water. They contain diuretic ingredients like caffeine, which can actually cause water loss. If you do drink coffee or green tea, be sure to replenish your water intake.
