A glass of water consumed after waking up brings various health benefits. However, drinking cold water can potentially worsen health, so caution is necessary. Learn about the benefits of drinking water in the morning and the side effects of cold water.

 

A glass of water immediately after waking helps eliminate waste and regulate appetite.

A glass of water right after waking up has several health benefits. Drinking water on an empty stomach can increase blood and lymph fluid levels, helping to eliminate waste products, and it also promotes intestinal movement, making bowel movements more active. Additionally, during sleep, the body loses up to 1 liter of water through sweat and respiration, and when blood viscosity increases during this time, the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke rises. Drinking water immediately after waking up can lower blood viscosity and help prevent these diseases.


Water also helps regulate appetite. The feeling of fullness that occurs after drinking water prevents overeating because calories are burned during water digestion. For this reason, drinking one or two glasses of water 30 to 15 minutes before a meal can fill the stomach with water and somewhat alleviate hunger. A study from the University of Virginia found that people who drank two cups of water 20 minutes before a meal lost about 2 kg more than those who did not drink water.

 

◇Cold water, actually causes digestive problems

 

However, you should not drink cold water immediately after waking up. Drinking cold water suddenly can excessively stimulate the autonomic nervous system, increasing the risk of arrhythmia and other heart problems. It may also cause our body to use unnecessary energy to raise its temperature back to normal. Especially for the elderly, drinking cold water when basal metabolic rate is already low can lead to a decrease in body temperature and reduced blood flow to the stomach, which may decrease digestive secretions, so caution is advised.

 

After waking up and while fasting, drink lukewarm water at around 30 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than body temperature. Also, when drinking water, it is better to do so slowly and at a relaxed pace. For patients with hypertension or those who have experienced cerebral aneurysm or cerebral hemorrhage, drinking water quickly can cause a sudden increase in brain blood flow, which may lead to rupture of brain blood vessels or other problems. It is recommended to take at least 5 minutes or more and drink water slowly.

Meanwhile, it is better to avoid drinking coffee, green tea, and other beverages instead of water. They contain ingredients like caffeine that have diuretic effects, causing the body to lose water. If you have consumed coffee or green tea, make sure to replenish with additional water accordingly.
