With the recent sharp drop in temperature, many people are complaining of knee joint pain. This is because the cold wind constricts the blood vessels, muscles, and ligaments around the joints, causing them to stiffen. For those with degenerative arthritis, particularly, large daily temperature fluctuations can exacerbate symptoms and worsen pain.

Osteoarthritis is a common disease affecting one in three people over 65 years of age, and as symptoms progress, it significantly reduces quality of life. To avoid limitations in activities, it's crucial to maintain joint and cartilage health.

 

◇Cartilage that cannot be repaired once damaged

Degenerative arthritis occurs due to wear and tear of the cartilage, which acts as a cushion between bones, or due to aging. This is due to a decrease in the body's synthesis of complex proteins that form cartilage. When bone friction damages bones and ligaments, it causes pain and inflammation.

 

 

. Cartilage has no blood vessels or nerves, so it is difficult for it to recover naturally once damaged. Moreover, it is very thin at only 3-4mm, and because there are no symptoms even when 70% of the cartilage is worn away, many people do not realize that it is damaged. Cartilage problems are occurring not only in the middle-aged and elderly, but also in those in their 20s and 30s. Chondromalacia, caused by golf, hiking, and excessive muscle strength training, is a representative example. Chondromalacia refers to the weakening or damage of the cartilage tissue within the joint. It is particularly prevalent in women.

 

◇ Helps ingesting cartilage components, such as mucopolysaccharides and chondroitin sulfate proteins.

 

For healthy joints and cartilage, regular exercise to strengthen muscles is beneficial. For joint pain, aquatic exercises like cycling and swimming are recommended. Cycling places weight on the hips, relieving joint strain, while aquatic exercises utilize buoyancy to move the body, reducing the weight-bearing load on joints. It's recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, three times a week.

 

It's also important to consistently consume ingredients that support cartilage. In particular, mucopolysaccharide protein (MPP), extracted from cartilage tissues such as cows, pigs, and sharks, is a Ministry of Food and Drug Safety-approved ingredient that supports joint and cartilage health. When consumed, it helps the proteoglycans in cartilage absorb water, promoting smooth joint movement. MPP also contains chondroitin sulfate, which acts very similarly to the chondroitin naturally produced in cartilage. This prevents the rapid destruction of aged cartilage and promotes the formation of new cartilage.
