Recently, as the temperature has dropped sharply, many people are complaining of knee joint pain. When cold wind blows, blood vessels, muscles, and ligaments in the joint area contract, causing the joint to become stiff and rigid. Especially for patients with degenerative arthritis, large temperature fluctuations can worsen symptoms and intensify pain.

Degenerative arthritis is a common age-related disease, experienced by one in three elderly people over 65, and as symptoms progress, it significantly reduces quality of life. To avoid restrictions in activity, it is important to protect joint and cartilage health in advance.

 

◇Cartilage that cannot be restored once damaged

Degenerative arthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions between bones wears down or ages. This is because the body's synthesis rate of complex proteins that form cartilage decreases. When bones and ligaments are damaged due to friction between bones, it causes pain and inflammation.

 

 

Cartilage has no blood vessels or nerves, so once damaged, it is difficult to recover naturally. Moreover, it is very thin, only about 3 to 4 mm thick, and even when 70% of the cartilage is worn down, there are often no symptoms, making it difficult to realize that damage is occurring. Cartilage problems are appearing not only in middle-aged and elderly people but also in the 20s and 30s. A typical example is cartilage softening caused by golf, hiking, or excessive strength training. Cartilage softening refers to the weakening or damage of cartilage tissue within the joint. It is especially common among women.

To maintain joint and cartilage health, it is helpful to strengthen muscles through regular exercise. If you experience joint pain, indoor cycling and swimming are good options. Cycling reduces joint strain by supporting weight on the hips, and water exercises utilize buoyancy to facilitate movement, thereby reducing the load on joints. Exercise is recommended for 30 minutes a day, at least three times a week.

 

It is also important to consistently consume ingredients that help cartilage. In particular, mucopolysaccharides extracted from cartilage tissue of cattle, pigs, and sharks are ingredients approved by the Korea Food & Drug Administration that aid in joint and cartilage health. When ingested, they help absorb moisture in proteoglycans within the cartilage, allowing joints to move smoothly. Mucopolysaccharides contain chondroitin sulfate, which acts very similarly to naturally occurring chondroitin in cartilage. Therefore, they prevent the rapid destruction of aging cartilage and promote the formation of new cartilage.
