Vigorous exercise has been shown to reduce hunger, particularly in women, reducing appetite. This provides yet another reason for those trying to lose weight to exercise.

According to the American medical journal 'Medical News Today', researchers at the University of Virginia found that intense exercise suppresses ghrelin more than moderate exercise, and that this effect may be more pronounced in women.

Ghrelin is a hormone associated with appetite. People with high ghrelin levels generally have more difficulty losing weight. Previous studies have shown that when dieting, ghrelin levels rise because the body is trying to protect itself from hunger. Anorexia and bulimia are linked to high ghrelin levels.

The researchers had eight healthy men with an average age of 43 and six healthy women with an average age of 32 exercise. They measured the participants' ghrelin levels before, after, and after moderate-intensity exercise. After each exercise session, the participants reported their appetite.

“Ghrelin is a hormone released from the stomach that interacts with the hypothalamus, the region of the brain that regulates hunger,” said Kara Anderson, a professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and senior author of the study. “We also found that female participants had lower levels of total ghrelin and lower levels of DAG ghrelin than male participants.” There are two types of ghrelin: acylated (AG) and deacylated (DAG). DAG accounts for about 80 percent of the ghrelin in the body.

Both men and women showed a decrease in DAG ghrelin levels after intense exercise. "High-intensity exercise can suppress hunger more than low-intensity exercise," he said. "Women also showed a significant decrease in AG type after high-intensity exercise."

"We all know the beneficial effects of exercise," said Mir Ali, director of the Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Orange County, California. "The small number of participants makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions." He added, "Protein and vegetables tend to suppress appetite for longer periods of time," and "We should reduce our intake of easily digestible simple carbohydrates and sugars."

===================

Intense exercise has been shown to make you forget about hunger.

Wow~~~ Just thinking about it makes me think that intense exercise would be incredibly difficult.

It makes you forget about hunger, so it must be helpful for dieting.
