How to Maintain Middle-Aged Weight to Prevent Fractures in Old Age

A study has shown that middle-aged individuals who have slightly lost weight and returned to a normal weight are at a higher risk of hip fractures in old age compared to those who have gained a little weight and become overweight.

A joint research team from Boston University School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School studied 1,772 adults aged 35 to 64 who participated in the Framingham Heart Study in the United States to examine the relationship between body mass index and hip joint. The research team followed the participants for an average of 17.1 years.

According to the research, individuals who experienced a slight change from overweight to normal weight in middle age had a 2.2 times higher average risk (up to 4.4 times) of all fractures after age 65 compared to those whose weight increased from normal to slightly overweight. The pattern of fracture risk was similar for pelvis, hip, leg, and foot fractures. The research team explained that during middle age, it is better to maintain a stable weight rather than losing weight excessively.

Research author Dr. Douglas Kiel stated, "Being slightly overweight within a normal weight range may help reduce the risk of fractures in old age," and added, "This does not mean neglecting moderate or higher levels of obesity."

Meanwhile, elderly hip fractures are also one of the causes that increase the risk of death in older adults. When basic physical activities become difficult due to fractures in old age, it can lead to various disabilities and complications, and in severe cases, it may result in death.

To prevent fractures, it is important to adequately supplement vitamin D through food, sunlight, and medication. Consuming calcium-rich foods such as milk, anchovies, and dairy products is also helpful, and aerobic and strength exercises should be combined.

You should also make sure to take calcium diligently.

My mother-in-law has a hip fracture.

Even that three times.

You have been through a lot, and they have passed away..

Elderly hip joints are really important.
