A study found that people who lose a little weight in middle age and return to a normal weight have a higher risk of hip fractures in old age than those who gain a little weight and become overweight.

 

A joint research team from Boston University School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School examined the relationship between body mass index and hip joint health in 1,772 adults aged 35 to 64 who participated in the Framingham Heart Study. The team followed the participants for an average of 17.1 years.

 

The study found that people who transitioned from slightly overweight to normal weight in middle age had an average 2.2 times (up to 4.4 times) higher risk of all fractures after age 65 compared to those who went from normal to slightly overweight. The risk of fractures in the lower extremities, including the pelvis, hip, leg, and foot, showed a similar pattern. The research team explained that maintaining a stable weight is better than excessive weight loss in middle age.


“Going from normal weight to slightly overweight may help reduce the risk of fractures later in life,” said study author Dr. Douglas Kiel. “It doesn’t mean that people should ignore moderate or severe obesity.”

 

Meanwhile, hip fractures in the elderly are also a risk factor for mortality. This is because fractures in the elderly can make it difficult to perform basic physical activities, leading to various disabilities and complications, and in severe cases, even death.

 

To prevent fractures, it's important to get adequate vitamin D through food, sunlight, and medication. Consuming calcium-rich foods like milk, anchovies, and dairy products is also helpful, and aerobic and strength training should also be included.
