Climbing stairs is good for your health. Its various benefits have been scientifically proven.

According to research from the University of East Anglia in the UK and cited by the American health and medical media outlet WebMD, climbing stairs reduces the risk of premature death by 24% and the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure by 39%. The research team announced that this was the result of analyzing nine research papers conducted on approximately 500,000 people. The results of this study were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress (Preventive Cardiology 2024 Conference).

However, it seems that there are not many people who regularly climb stairs.

Only about 2% of people in American shopping malls take the stairs instead of the escalator, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health that tracked customer behavior in two malls with both escalators and stairs. However, after posting signs saying, "Take the stairs for your health," the percentage of customers taking the stairs temporarily increased to 4.8% and 6.7%, respectively. Previous studies have shown that about 36% of Americans are inactive, and about 48% engage in only low levels of physical activity. Only about 16% of people adhere to recommended physical activity guidelines.

Climbing stairs is both an aerobic exercise and a strength training (muscle strengthening exercise). It's easy to do anytime, anywhere, as long as you're determined. It's a great exercise that people of all ages can do without spending extra money and in casual clothing, on the stairs of their apartment, shopping mall, workplace, or park. Previous research has shown that regular stair climbing reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome (a general term for various conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes), improves heart and vascular health, and helps with weight loss.

Professor Vasilios Vasiliou, a cardiologist at the University of East Anglia in the UK, said, "Stair climbing can burn up to four times more calories than walking." Simulation analysis also shows that a 77kg man can burn over 500kcal per hour while a 64kg woman can burn over 450kcal per hour while climbing stairs.

=============

Climbing stairs is an aerobic exercise

Effective when combined with strength training

Strengthen your thigh and buttock muscles

They say it helps a lot in doing that too.

It's more helpful to do it consistently.
