When you sweat a lot during exercise, you often feel a sense of accomplishment and also think that you will lose more weight. That's why many people wear thick padding or sweat suits while working out. Does sweating more actually mean the exercise is more effective?

 

Sweat plays a role in lowering body temperature by releasing moisture when the body temperature rises due to exercise. The more you sweat, the more waste products and bodily fluids are expelled, but it does not significantly enhance the effects of dieting. Even with the same exercise, the amount of sweat varies from person to person, and the weight loss effect depends on the calories burned based on the type and intensity of the exercise. While you may temporarily lose weight after sweating heavily, drinking plenty of water will restore it to the original weight. This is because it is not fat burning, but rather water loss.

On the contrary, excessive sweating can cause side effects. Exercises that cause heavy sweating can put a strain not only on joints and the musculoskeletal system but also on the heart and vascular system. Additionally, excessive sweating lowers sodium and electrolyte levels, leading to dehydration. Dehydration reduces exercise efficiency. Losing 3-4% of body weight in water decreases physical activity capacity by 20-30% during long-distance aerobic exercise, and if sweating reaches 5-6% of body weight, it becomes difficult to regulate body temperature, and heart rate and respiration also increase. People with hypertension or cardiovascular issues are at risk of fainting due to dehydration symptoms.

 

Furthermore, exercising while wearing sweat suits creates an environment similar to exercising in hot and humid weather. Therefore, it reduces fat utilization and increases carbohydrate usage. The lactic acid produced within the muscles is also not easily expelled, leading to a quicker sense of fatigue.

 

Therefore, during exercise, it is best to engage in moderate-intensity exercise that causes sweating. Approximately, when reaching the peak of the workout, just enough sweat should dampen the underwear. It is also necessary to drink 120-150mL of water every 10-15 minutes of exercise. Additionally, when exercising, wear lightweight, breathable functional clothing rather than sweat suits. Before aerobic exercise, do warm-up exercises, and after exercising, it is important to do cool-down exercises for about 5-10 minutes to help the sweat evaporate.
