Does exercising 'like this' actually make you age faster?
Regular exercise is essential for health. However, overdoing it in the name of health management can have adverse effects. Excessive exercise promotes the production of active oxygen, which can actually accelerate the aging of the body.
Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) not only accelerate aging but also pose a risk of causing diseases. This is because ROS attack cells, transforming genes and inducing cancer. ROS also destroy nutrients such as fats and proteins that are necessary for metabolism. According to research from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, high levels of ROS in the body increase the amount of JNK (a signaling molecule that induces cell death), which damages normal cells. It also secretes inflammatory substances like cytokines, leading to chronic inflammation. If ROS damage brain cells excessively, it can result in dementia. When blood vessels are injured, it can cause arteriosclerosis; if the eyes are affected, it can lead to cataracts; and if the skin is impacted, it results in more wrinkles.
Reactive oxygen species are continuously generated during our breathing. This is because nutrients and oxygen are the main raw materials that produce reactive oxygen species. Therefore, overeating or strenuous exercise that causes rapid breathing results in the production of more reactive oxygen species. When engaging in high-intensity exercise, it is important to gradually reduce activity and stop exercising. This way, oxygen is consumed little by little, preventing the remaining oxygen from turning into reactive oxygen species. If you suddenly stop vigorous exercise, the excess oxygen produced to maintain high exercise intensity is not used for energy and becomes reactive oxygen species. Therefore, ☆exercise should preferably be performed at a moderate intensity that causes just a light sweat.
In addition, the habit of sitting with your legs crossed in the traditional Korean style (yangban style) can also generate reactive oxygen species. When sitting in this position, blood flow to the legs is restricted, and oxygen and nutrients do not reach the nerves. Suddenly standing up can cause the suppressed blood to flow and generate reactive oxygen species.
☆Avoid cigarette smoke, stress, and ultraviolet rays as they promote the production of reactive oxygen species.☆☆ Conversely, eating vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, and other nutrients helps combat reactive oxygen species and aids in preventing aging.
