A woman who exercises 3 hours a day… What changes occur in her body?

Yang Tae-gyu's story

These days, if you visit a gym or other exercise center, you'll often see many women engaging in more intense exercise than men. They often engage in various types of exercise for extended periods of time, often for health reasons or to lose weight. The story of a woman who worked out for three hours a day is attracting significant attention.

Many women work out hard for their health and diet.

A woman living in the UK became so obsessed with exercise that she spent three hours a day. She had been losing weight since her teens through excessive exercise and a restrictive diet. At the time, she didn't understand the importance of nutrition and simply believed she needed to lose weight, so she starved herself and went to the gym every day for an hour. Her obsession with exercise grew until she started going to the gym twice a day and running on the treadmill, and soon she switched to CrossFit. So, did she become healthier?

She was so addicted to exercise that she couldn't go a day without exercising for at least two hours, and if she missed a significant workout, she felt depressed. She also worried that if she missed more than three days, her stamina would decline and she would gain weight again.

It is also common to see women lifting more weight and stronger than men.

She says she overworked her body the most, running a half-marathon with torn knee cartilage and even attempting a 21km obstacle course. Her body couldn't handle it anymore, and it sent her warning signals. Menstruation, a crucial period for women, stopped. As estrogen levels declined, her bones began to weaken. Realizing she was overworking herself and neglecting nutrition, she began to gain weight and reduce her exercise. She then used stress-reducing techniques to get her period back. It wasn't until six years later that she began experiencing physical symptoms that her periods returned to normal.

“Recovering from amenorrhea was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she said, adding that “women need to be aware of the side effects of irregular periods and excessive exercise.”

What is the Female Athlete Triad?

The term "female athlete triad" describes the relationship between three health risk factors: amenorrhea, osteoporosis, and eating disorders. This triad is particularly prevalent in women who exercise intensely, and can have serious nutritional implications. To exercise effectively, the body needs to be fueled. However, when we don't eat enough or exercise excessively, a complex interaction occurs within our bodies, negatively impacting our health. This can slow down our metabolism, and in women, it can lead to amenorrhea.

Also, when you exercise, your body needs to build muscle, but due to rapid dietary restrictions, the muscle is broken down and the necessary nutrients are not sent to the major organs, so the body's muscle mass decreases.

So, how can we avoid the "three signs of female athletes" and exercise healthily? Here are some tips.

  1. Eat three meals a day
  2. Eat a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
  3. Do not omit specific food groups such as fats.
  4. Eat a meal rich in carbohydrates and protein within 30 to 60 minutes after exercising.
  5. If you exercise for more than 90 minutes, eat some carbohydrates or drink a sports drink every 15 to 30 minutes.
  6. Finally, consume sufficient calcium, 1000-1300 mg per day.
