People who sit for long periods... 'Lack of physical activity' is also associated with a negative personality!
Many studies have shown that people who sit all day for work lack physical activity, leading to an increase in various adult diseases. In fact, avoiding exercise and living a sedentary lifestyle increases the likelihood of exposure to various illnesses. However, there are also research findings indicating that living mainly by sitting without exercising can affect one's personality. This explores the impact of lack of physical activity on personality.
◆ Lack of physical activity is harmful to health
On average, people spend 76 days a year sitting. The World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that this inactivity, or lack of physical activity, claims the lives of millions each year. It is now well known that the longer one lives a sedentary lifestyle, the more health problems can arise. Additionally, insufficient physical activity has been shown to influence changes in an individual's personality.
The less active you are, the more negative your personality becomes!
According to a joint research team from the United States and France, a sedentary lifestyle with insufficient physical activity has a harmful impact on personality after 20 years. The data from 6,000 Americans in the early 1990s, with an average age in the early 50s, included personality test results and physical activity measurements. A comparative analysis between the 2011 test results and the original data showed that individual personalities changed depending on the level of physical activity. The less physical activity, the more negative changes appeared in personality.
The weaker the exercise intensity, the more negative changes in personality.
Records of individual health, psychological state, and medical history also served as reference data for this study. The analysis results showed that individual health status and personality types varied from person to person, but there was a consistent correlation between lack of physical activity and personality changes. Light physical activities such as gardening, moderate-intensity exercises like brisk walking, and high-intensity exercises such as running all exhibited specific patterns of personality change depending on the intensity of physical activity. Generally, "the weaker the exercise intensity, the more negative the changes in personality."
Physiological changes due to exercise influence personality
It is hypothesized that these analytical results are due to the fact that basic physiological characteristics, including stress responses, are related to personality. Physiological changes that occur when not exercising may also have a negative impact on personality. Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle reduces the likelihood of engaging in activities associated with curiosity and adventurousness. The inability to experience mood improvement effects from exercise has also been analyzed as a reason for its negative influence on personality.
