Although it's a hot summer, I hesitate to take a cold shower. Even if I am sweating profusely, pouring cold water can cause a momentary discomfort.

Experts say that excessively cold water can weaken the skin barrier, leading to redness, and some people may develop hives when exposed to environments with very low temperatures.

However, at the temperature of tap water, you can enjoy various health benefits beyond just cooling the body. Experts explain, "Soaking in cold water or taking a shower is considered a form of cold therapy and is often used to relieve pain in athletes."

Soothing the skin = Cold water can have a calming effect on the skin. In particular, it can constrict blood vessels to reduce redness and swelling. In other words, it is useful for flushing, as well as inflammation such as eczema and psoriasis.

As swelling and inflammation decrease, it can also help improve dry and itchy skin. Experts say, "Cold showers can alleviate itching associated with specific skin conditions such as allergic dermatitis, hives, sunburn, and eczema." Additionally, cold water makes the skin less dry than hot water and is less likely to wash away natural oils.

Reduces inflammation and pain = Washing with cold water not only helps alleviate inflammation or irritated skin but also appears to reduce systemic inflammation and ease pain. Experts explain, "It is believed that low temperatures decrease inflammation and numb pain receptors in the skin."

When injured, ice packs are recommended, and athletes spray cooling sprays or take ice baths after exercising. According to studies, these forms of cold therapy are effective in reducing inflammation and pain caused by exercise.

Cold water baths boost immunity = Cold water bathing has been shown to help improve immunity. According to a study, people who took a 30-second cold shower daily for at least 30 consecutive days had a 29% lower rate of sick leave from work compared to those who took regular showers. This suggests that cold water showers may potentially reduce the risk of illness.

Increasing alertness = Starting the day with a cold water shower can actually help wake up the body and boost energy. Experts say, "Cold water showers increase alertness by raising adrenaline as part of the body's short-term response to cold exposure." According to studies, people who immersed their bodies in cold water for five minutes reported feeling more alert and being more active afterward.

Improving blood circulation = Low temperatures constrict blood vessels, which can help improve the body's blood circulation. When surface blood vessels are exposed to cold water, blood flow constricts and directs blood to deeper tissues in the skin. This may also help enhance blood flow.
