Some people have cereal with milk in the morning. They enjoy this combination because it provides a feeling of fullness, but in fact, this combination can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar, which is not good for health.

In fact, a research team at Stanford University in the United States observed blood sugar changes after breakfast in 30 healthy experimental participants. The research team classified the participants into three groups based on whether their blood sugar fluctuation patterns were large or small. The team controlled the participants' diets so that they alternated between eating cereal with milk, bread with peanut butter, and protein bars.

As a result, each participant in the three groups showed varying increases in blood sugar levels even with the same meal. More than half of the participants who had previously been diagnosed as normal in a diabetes test exhibited blood sugar increases similar to those with diabetes or prediabetes after breakfast. In particular, 80% of the participants experienced blood sugar spikes after breakfast consisting of milk and cornflakes. Frequent blood sugar spikes cause cells to become less responsive to insulin, the hormone that lowers blood sugar. This increases the risk of developing diabetes.

If you want to eat cereal and milk together while taking care of your health, it is recommended to eat granola. Granola is rich in dietary fiber, which takes a long time to digest. Therefore, blood sugar rises slowly, reducing the risk of developing diabetes. When dietary fiber is broken down by gut microbiota, beneficial bacteria in the intestines proliferate, which also decreases the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Meanwhile, whether it's cornflakes or granola, it is advisable to check the ingredient list before purchasing and choose one with less sugar. Commercial cereals often contain high levels of sugar. If honey, fructose, glucose, or sugar are listed on the ingredient label, there is a high possibility that the product contains simple sugars that quickly raise blood sugar levels. If you want to eat sweet cereal, it is better to choose one that contains complex sugars like oligosaccharides. Complex sugars are absorbed into the body at about half the speed of simple sugars, resulting in a relatively slower increase in blood sugar levels.
