One of the most annoying and common diseases that occur during the summer is conjunctivitis. High temperatures and humidity create an ideal environment for the proliferation of various bacteria and viruses. Additionally, playing in the water at swimming pools or having contaminated sweat enter the eyes can also cause eye infections.

According to American health and medical media outlets such as 'Healthline,' eye infections are often associated with water activities, but the bed, which we consider the most comfortable space, can also be a cause of eye infections. Mold, bacteria, and house dust mites can cause infections through bed covers, blankets, and pillows.

Among them, pillows are especially close to the eyes as bedding and are directly connected to eye infections. Dandruff, skin oils, and hair that come off the face mix together, providing food for dust mites in the pillowcase, making it an ideal place for bacteria to breed.

Therefore, maintaining cleanliness through regular washing and sterilization is of utmost importance. Pillows should be dusted off outside every day or vacuumed with a bedding cleaner to remove dust, bacteria, and other harmful substances.

Wash once a week, but for pillow fillings like cotton or buckwheat husks that are difficult to clean, they should be exposed to sunlight at least once a week to eliminate bacteria. Since pillowcases are difficult to wash, bacteria can continuously proliferate, and it is also difficult to completely remove dead bacteria or bacterial excretions.

Therefore, it is better to replace pillows that have been used for about three years with new ones. When the humidity is high, mold and bacteria grow more easily, so if the room is humid and bedding is damp, use a dehumidifier to lower indoor humidity or place charcoal to absorb moisture.

Special caution is also needed at vacation accommodations. If the lodging does not replace pillows and bed sheets daily, there is a risk that someone with conjunctivitis may sleep on the same pillow and then use it themselves.
