Wrist fracture after falling on icy ground. I was shocked to hear I have osteoporosis.
The winter before last, I slipped on the snow and fractured my wrist. It was partly because I fell hard while being defenseless, but I was also surprised at how easily I fractured at my age, so I had an X-ray and osteoporosis test done. When I received the results, I was completely shocked.
Osteoporosis test result shows a T-score of -3.03.
I am taking medication because of osteoporosis.
I did notice that my body's functions gradually declined after menopause, but I never expected to have osteoporosis with such low bone density... It was really surprising, and I was very worried.
So, I am also practicing walking 10,000 steps every day, and I am taking vitamin D injections and osteoporosis medication.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bone mineral density decreases, resulting in many holes forming in the bones, making them thinner and weaker, and prone to fracture even with minor impacts.
In simple terms, when we make beef bone soup or bear meat soup and let it simmer for a long time, if you look at the bones afterward, you'll see holes in the bones. The holes on the cross-section of the bones are said to be caused by a decrease in bone density.
If we have osteoporosis, our bone condition is
You can think of it as being that way.
That's why fractures happen easily.
While taking medication and receiving treatment for osteoporosis are important, prevention is also considered very crucial.
Osteoporosis mainly occurs in the elderly, but young people can also develop osteoporosis due to various causes.
Osteoporosis is also called a "silent disease" because it often has few symptoms and is difficult to recognize until the bones become weak.
What is the cause of this silent disease, osteoporosis?
First, it is related to aging.
Especially in postmenopausal women, a decrease in estrogen levels leads to an imbalance in bone remodeling.
In men, testosterone levels decrease due to aging, leading to a reduction in bone density.
Second, osteoporosis can also occur due to certain diseases or medication use.
Rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease can also cause osteoporosis.
Long-term use of certain medications like steroids is also said to decrease bone density.
Symptoms of osteoporosis
There are no early symptoms of osteoporosis, but osteoporosis
As it progresses
Fracture: Occurs in areas such as the spine, hip joint, and wrist.
Lower back pain: Caused by compression fracture of the spine.
Physical changes: The spine becomes deformed, leading to a decrease in height or the appearance of kyphosis.
Crooked grandmothers have osteoporosis.
I looked into what treatments and prevention methods are available for osteoporosis.
Drug therapy: estrogen modulators, calcitonin, or others
There are drug treatments that increase bone density and regulate bone remodeling, such as bisphosphonates.
To prevent osteoporosis
Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient calcium and vitamin D are important.
Especially exercising while supporting the body's weight
Weight-bearing exercise is said to be effective in increasing bone strength.
For example, there are walking, running, squats, and push-ups.
Osteoporosis is a preventable disease, and early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of fractures.
I had a fracture at that time and underwent osteoporosis testing, but please don't wait until you get injured like me.
We strongly recommend that you undergo regular check-ups in advance to prevent osteoporosis.
