Many people struggle with double chin fat that persists despite diligent dieting. Some people are slim but still have a prominent double chin. Why is this? Let's explore other causes and solutions for double chins.

 

◇Aging

 

If your jowls are more prominent than before, it could be due to sagging skin caused by aging. As the fat cells and muscles in your face age, they lose elasticity and relax, causing the skin to sag downwards, in the direction of gravity. Stretching can help. Tilt your head back, look at the ceiling, and pout your lips for 10 seconds, then slowly lower your head. Repeating this 10 times will not only help reduce jowls but also strengthen your facial and neck muscles. Another option is to place a tennis ball or baseball under your chin and press firmly for 30 seconds. The more pressure you apply, the greater the effect. Alternatively, you can use a lifting band to lift your jowls or use a lifting procedure (Inmode, laser lifting, or thread lifting) to lift sagging jowls.

◇Genetic causes

Some people are genetically predisposed to developing a double chin. This is especially true for those with a high level of fat and muscle mass under the chin. These individuals are more prone to developing a double chin than others due to excess jowl fat. If stress is a factor, liposuction can be used to remove excess chin fat. Bone problems can also cause a double chin appearance. This is commonly referred to as "chinless." This occurs when the lower jawbone is smaller than the upper jawbone, making it appear as if there's no chin at all. Chin-less surgery can be effective in this situation.

 

◇Sialpharyngeal hypertrophy

 

If you suddenly notice bulging skin under your ears and chin, you may have hypersalivary gland hyperplasia. Hypersalivary gland hyperplasia is a condition in which the salivary glands swell due to various factors that hinder saliva discharge. It's usually caused by irritation from frequent overeating, late-night snacking, excessive drinking and smoking, excessive consumption of hard foods, and vomiting. Swollen submandibular glands in particular can stretch the sides of your neck, making your jawline appear particularly swollen. Hypersalivary gland hyperplasia can cause headaches, snoring, and sleep apnea. Lifestyle changes, and if these don't improve, botulinum toxin injections are also recommended.

 

◇Bad posture, turtle neck

 

A double chin is often caused by poor posture. This is especially true when looking at a smartphone or reading a book, which often leads to sagging of the chin and weakened muscles, which can lead to a double chin. Severe forward head posture (Tortoise neck) can also cause jowls to remain stubbornly stubborn. This is because the neck protrudes forward, weakening the muscles under the chin and increasing the risk of fat accumulation. If this posture becomes chronic, the neck can become shorter and wider, making the double chin appear even more pronounced. To correct a forward head posture (Tortoise neck), sit with your back straight and use your computer monitor or smartphone at eye level. Position the screen 15-30 degrees below your central line of sight, ideally 60-80cm away. Stretching exercises are also important. For example, place your fingers on your chin, push it back, and hold for two seconds. Repeat this motion.
