Can superfoods also cause weight gain?!!

Avocado is a famous superfood. It is an excellent source of healthy fats that are beneficial for heart health and other health benefits. According to the American Heart Association, eating just one avocado a day can lower levels of 'bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol)'. Moreover, it tastes good. However, it is also easy to gain weight if consumed excessively. According to USDA data, the caloric content of a standard-sized avocado is 322 kcal (160 kcal per 100g). The calorie content of one avocado is nearly the daily recommended caloric intake for our citizens.

A significant portion of the daily caloric intake for men in their 40s (2300 kcal) and women (1800 kcal), as well as men in their 50s (2100 kcal) and women (1600 kcal), is contributed by avocados. It is better to consume small amounts of avocado with other foods rather than eating it as a fruit on its own.

Salmon is well known for its benefits in preventing cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke. This is thanks to omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA). However, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, the caloric content of the recommended daily intake of salmon (about 85g) is 208Kcal. On its own, this is not a major concern, but salmon steaks are typically about twice that size. Additionally, adding various delicious seasonings can significantly increase the calorie content. For example, a 170g salmon steak can have up to 1470Kcal. This accounts for about 75% of the average woman's daily caloric intake. To avoid these pitfalls, it is better to eat modestly grilled salmon steaks at home.

Yogurt is one of the top superfoods. However, adding low-fat or flavored varieties significantly increases the calorie content. Consuming a lot of flavored yogurt can lead to weight gain rather than weight loss. In particular, yogurt with a high amount of artificial sweeteners is problematic. According to a study by Purdue University in the United States, artificial sweeteners are still associated with weight gain. Mice fed foods sweetened with artificial sweeteners ate more, gained more weight, and accumulated more body fat compared to mice fed foods sweetened with sugar. This supports the theory that sweetness in the brain promotes calorie intake, and when the brain perceives a calorie deficiency, it triggers hunger signals, leading to overeating. It is better to buy plain yogurt and add chopped fruit yourself.

Dried fruits are popular among people who like sweet things because they are considered a substitute for sugar. However, they are quite high in calories. Eating just 85g of dried fruits like dried plums can result in an intake of 359 kcal. Additionally, many vitamins and nutrients are lost during the drying process. Overeating them can unexpectedly lead to serious health issues.
