Eye examination

Should I have my eyes checked just like a health screening?
 
It's a detailed examination at the ophthalmology clinic, not a vision test.
 
My mother has macular degeneration, and my aunt also has macular degeneration.
 
It seems like my older cousin also feels the same way.
 
I'm considering whether I should get regular check-ups because I think it's hereditary.

There is something I can check myself, so I wonder if I really need to undergo a formal examination.
