A study found that increasing the intake of foods rich in potassium, such as bananas, is more effective in lowering blood pressure than limiting salt intake.
A research team at the George Institute for Global Health (GIGH) at Imperial College London (ICL) in the United Kingdom conducted an analysis based on data from a 2021 study in China that analyzed the relationship between salt substitutes and stroke in 29,955 people over five years. The research team analyzed data recording blood pressure changes after half of the study participants used regular salt for cooking, etc., and the other half used salt with a quarter of the salt replaced with potassium chloride.
The study found that participants in the group that consumed high-potassium salt had lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease. Specifically, over the five-year study period, 3,000 participants experienced a stroke, but those who consumed high-potassium salt were 14% less likely to experience a stroke.
Regarding this, the research team explained that about 80% of the decrease in blood pressure was due to increased potassium intake rather than reduced salt intake, and that increasing daily potassium intake by 1g resulted in a 2mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure.
Therefore, the research team said that consuming an extra 1 gram of potassium every day, which is the amount found in two medium-sized bananas, a cup of spinach, or a large sweet potato, may be the simplest way to combat high blood pressure.
Potassium is abundant in foods such as ▲green leafy vegetables ▲legumes ▲nuts ▲bananas. However, caution is advised as hyperkalemia can occur in rare cases, such as in those with impaired kidney function, if taken excessively.
"Both sodium chloride excess and potassium deficiency are associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and premature death," said study author Dr. Polly Huang of GIGH. "Using salt substitutes containing potassium chloride could immediately reduce these risks."
