Diabetes and hypertension patients worried about Chuseok foods... Remember 'this' and enjoy comfortably

During Chuseok, you can enjoy delicious foods. However, if you have health issues, you should eat carefully. By properly adjusting recipes and portion sizes, you can fully enjoy holiday foods. Learn how people with diabetes, kidney disease, gout, and hypertension can maintain their health while eating deliciously.

Diabetes mellitus

Diabetic patients should avoid excessive intake of sugary and starchy foods to prevent a rapid increase in blood sugar levels.

Especially, songpyeon contains 50-60 kcal per piece, so just five pieces are equivalent to a bowl of rice in high-calorie content.

Sikhye and sujeonggwa have high sugar content and are liquid in form, so they quickly raise blood sugar levels when consumed.

Therefore, if you eat these high-carbohydrate and high-blood-sugar holiday foods, it is better to reduce the amount of rice during the meal.

Diabetes patients should also be prepared for hypoglycemia.

If you miss meal times due to long-distance travel or increase your activity level compared to usual, such as during grave cleaning, you may experience hypoglycemia.

It is advisable to prepare candies, yogurt, and other items in preparation for this.

▷Kidney Disease

Patients with kidney disease should pay special attention to potassium intake. Due to impaired kidney function, potassium may not be excreted properly, leading to symptoms such as paralysis, diarrhea, and vomiting. In particular, sesame seeds, red beans, soybeans, mung beans, and chestnuts, which are commonly used as fillings in rice cakes (songpyeon), have high potassium content, so it is better to use sweetened rice cakes (honey rice cakes). To control salt intake, the liver should be prepared as bland as possible. Using natural seasonings such as lemon juice, garlic, or ginger instead of salt or soy sauce is also a good method. Additionally, avoid pre-seasoning the food; instead, season it just before eating to reduce salt content while maintaining good flavor.

Gout

Gout patients should avoid foods high in purine content. Purines are a type of nitrogen compound that, when broken down in the body, convert into uric acid. A proper amount of uric acid is excreted through metabolic processes via urine, but excessive intake of high-purine foods can cause uric acid to accumulate in the body, leading to gout. Therefore, it is important to eat less grilled fish, beer, and similar foods, and to consume plenty of water and vegetables. Drinking enough water helps facilitate uric acid excretion through urine. Vegetables rich in fiber, folate, and vitamin C help prevent the buildup of uric acid, so it is advisable to consume them in sufficient quantities.

High blood pressure

What hypertensive patients need to be cautious about is 'sodium.' Excessive intake of sodium increases the salt concentration in the body, which causes the body to produce more blood to restore normal levels, leading to an increase in blood pressure. Therefore, if you or a family member has hypertension, it is advisable to prepare food with reduced salt content. First, when boiling soup, use natural ingredients such as kelp or beef. For ceremonial dishes like meat, fish, or seasoned vegetables, reduce the amount of salt and enhance flavor using ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and other seasonings.
