If the elastic band marks caused by pressure from socks or pants persist for a long time, you should suspect 'edema'.
Edema is a condition in which fluid accumulates in the interstitial tissue between cells outside of blood vessels, causing swelling. Pressing on the instep or ankle often leaves a mark. This is called pitting edema, and pitting edema occurs when fluid accumulates to around 4-5 liters.
Before this condition occurs, symptoms such as ▲weight gain, ▲severe weight fluctuations during the day, ▲decreased urine output, ▲frequent waking up from sleep to urinate, ▲tight rings or shoes, ▲swollen eyes in the morning, ▲shortness of breath when lying down and having to sit up, or ▲shortness of breath when exercising appear.
If you experience edema, you should check your health. It could be a sign of kidney, liver, or heart disease. Kidney problems that hinder the proper filtration of waste products can lead to edema. Liver diseases like cirrhosis and heart conditions like congestive heart failure are also major causes of edema. Other conditions that can cause edema include hypothyroidism, pregnancy, and nutritional deficiencies.
If you're taking high blood pressure medication, hormones, or anti-inflammatory painkillers, these medications may be the cause. In this case, no specific abnormalities are observed in urine or blood tests. Most symptoms return to normal once the causative medication is discontinued.
It could also be "idiopathic edema," which occurs without a clear cause. It primarily affects women in their 20s and before menopause. Symptoms often include extreme daily weight fluctuations, headaches, abdominal bloating, depression, anxiety, and tension. While the exact cause is unknown, conditions like menstruation, emotional stress, obesity, and excessively high ambient temperatures are known to worsen symptoms.
Some people take diuretics, which increase urination, to reduce swelling. While they may feel a temporary reduction in swelling, the swelling returns over time. Stopping the diuretic can lead to even more swelling, leading to a vicious cycle of increasing diuretic dosage. In the long term, this can lead to impaired kidney function and chronic renal failure, so it's absolutely forbidden to take diuretics on your own.
If medical conditions aren't the cause, lifestyle changes are essential. Reduce salt intake by eating less salty foods, and take frequent breaks to lie down. Wearing elastic socks or stockings can also help compress the body and drain fluids into the veins.
