Panic disorder and arrhythmia are often confused due to similar physical symptoms, but these are very different conditions. Panic disorder mainly occurs due to mental and psychological causes, while arrhythmia is a physical problem caused by issues with the heart's electrical activity. By examining the symptoms and causes of each, the differences between them can be clearly understood.

Panic disorder refers to sudden episodes of intense anxiety or fear. These fears come unexpectedly and can last from a few minutes to several hours. During a panic attack, symptoms such as a very rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath or a feeling of suffocation, sweating, and dizziness can occur. These symptoms can feel like heart problems, making it easy to confuse them with arrhythmia.

However, the main cause of panic disorder lies in psychological factors. Stress, anxiety, trauma, and other factors make the body extremely sensitive, and when these anxious states accumulate, excessive physical reactions occur. Panic attacks are not actually life-threatening situations, but they are very frightening experiences for patients, causing them to fear another attack.

Arrhythmia refers to a condition where the heart's rhythm beats irregularly. A normal heart beats at a regular pace, but when arrhythmia occurs, it is characterized by the heart beating too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Arrhythmia occurs when there is an abnormality in the heart's electrical signals, and its causes are very diverse. Heart disease, electrolyte imbalances, and side effects of medications can all cause arrhythmia.

Patients with arrhythmia may experience symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting in severe cases. Some arrhythmias can be life-threatening, while others are not serious and do not require treatment.

The biggest difference is that panic disorder mainly occurs due to psychological issues, while arrhythmia is caused by electrical problems in the heart. During a panic attack, you may also feel your heart pounding rapidly, but this is a physical response to psychological anxiety. In contrast, arrhythmia involves an actual abnormal change in the heart's rhythm.

Additionally, panic disorder is mainly triggered by specific situations or triggers and gradually alleviates over time. However, arrhythmia can occur unexpectedly, and if there are structural or electrical problems in the heart, symptoms may persist continuously.

Panic disorder can be treated through psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication, while arrhythmia is treated using medications for the heart, electrical treatments (pacemakers, defibrillators), and surgery.
