High school teacher Kim Kwan-haeng, who survived a lightning strike, announced that he donated 10 million won to the hospital that saved his life. The mortality rate for patients struck by lightning is known to be around 99%, with a survival rate of about 1%.

On the 25th, tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' featured Mr. Kim and Professor Jo Yong-su, an emergency medicine specialist at Chonnam National University.

Mr. Kim went to Chosun University Campus in Dong-gu, Gwangju, for training on August 5th and was struck by lightning and collapsed. Fortunately, he was discovered by a teaching assistant from the College of Education nearby, received CPR, and was transferred to Chosun University Hospital emergency room within 7 minutes.

Mr. Kim's father, who appeared on the broadcast that day, recalled, "I still have vivid memories. I received a call around 12:20 saying it seemed like he was struck by lightning at 12 o'clock. They told me they had been performing CPR for over 20 minutes, but his heart hadn't restarted, and they asked me when I could come."

He said, "My whole family is in Seoul, and I told them I would go down immediately and to work hard." He revealed, "I was riding the SRT from Suseo Station to Gwangju and was scared, so I couldn't call."

My father said, "Fortunately, I received a call that his heart started beating again after 10 minutes," and explained, "I went to the emergency room relieved, but he was unconscious and connected to all kinds of machines. They said his lungs were filled with water, so oxygen couldn't be supplied. If he could endure that state, he would survive; if not, he would die."

He continued, "As time went on, we kept increasing the oxygen concentration and the pressor agents. I could see him dying right in front of my eyes. I just hoped he would survive. His face was swollen enough to make me wonder if he was really my son, and he looked so unwell that I felt suffocated again from that point."

Mr. Kim, whose condition worsened at the time, was eventually transferred to Chonnam National University Hospital equipped with ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). ECMO is a device that takes blood out of the body, supplies oxygen, and then reinjects it into the body, effectively replacing heart and lung functions externally.

After three days of continuous ECMO treatment day and night, Mr. Kim gradually regained his strength, and his condition improved enough to remove the ventilator after 10 days of hospitalization.

Professor Jo Yong-soo, who led the ECMO treatment, said, "Initially, the condition was very poor. The heart had stopped for too long, and there was no consciousness at all. We used all the medications available to raise blood pressure, but the blood pressure could not even be maintained at half of normal levels. Even with the use of a ventilator, the severe hypoxia meant the patient could have died within 1 to 2 hours."

He said, "In fact, the survival rate for lightning strike accidents is said to be 1%, but I think it's even lower. When someone is struck by lightning and their heart stops, they are declared dead if CPR is not performed for more than 30 minutes. Personally, I thought recovery was impossible, but Mr. Kim alone overcame that."

He continued, "I believe I overcame it because the sky helped me and my will was strong. I resolved that from now on, doctors should never give up before the patients."

Mr. Kim donated 10 million won to Chonnam National University Hospital last month and said, "I didn't realize I would benefit from the emergency medicine department. I am grateful to everyone else, so I decided to donate."

He also often hears to buy a lottery ticket recently, but he feels that just surviving itself is like using up all his luck, saying, "I think I was the unluckiest person among the unlucky. I was lucky in the discovery and transfer. I showed a scene that would leave trauma, but I overcame it and am grateful for being saved."
