Eating ramen and a bowl of rice? How common eating habits are damaging our health

The taste of ramen is the broth~

Jjamppong, ramen, noodles, stew, soup, etc.

When the weather gets cooler, do you crave more hot soup dishes?

Koreans eat a lot of stews..

I also slurp the broth first... but it's said to be an unhealthy eating habit.

The incidence of stomach cancer is also high, and hypertension is said to be most significantly affected by salty foods.

I only blanch the ramen noodles once and then boil them again, but doing so makes the noodles less chewy...

They don't like kids, you know.

It's best to discard as much broth as possible and avoid drinking it.

It is common to add rice to the leftover broth after boiling ramen and eat it. However, if this eating habit continues, it can lead to weight gain and damage to vascular health.

Let's find out how the habit of mixing rice with soup because the soup is too precious can harm our health.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency recommends not to eat rice with soup or stew broth. Most soups and broths contain a lot of salt, making them salty. What happens if you add side dishes like kimchi or radish kimchi? It would be like eating soup or stew with a lot of salt along with salted side dishes.

Excessive intake of sodium can damage the stomach lining and raise blood pressure. According to the National Cancer Registration Statistics announced by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in December 2023, there were 29,361 new cases of stomach cancer in South Korea in 2021 alone. Hypertension is also most significantly affected by salty foods that constrict blood vessels.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency also recommends through various materials not to immediately eat potatoes or sweet potatoes as dessert after consuming rice. This is because all three foods are high in carbohydrates, which can cause a spike in blood sugar levels after a meal. Additionally, most ramen noodles are made primarily of carbohydrates.

If this kind of eating habit persists for a long time, it can lead to failure in preventing and managing diabetes. Eating vegetables first before meals, known as the 'reverse eating method,' can help with blood sugar control.

Additionally, ramen is a processed food that is fried in oil and contains various additives. The broth may contain a high amount of saturated fat. It is already widely known that saturated fat is one of the causes of obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

Continuous intake of saturated fats can accumulate in the blood vessels, leading to hyperlipidemia (dyslipidemia), and ultimately causing arteriosclerosis, which narrows the arteries.

So, what should be done about the ramen broth? Even if you eat it with rice, it's better to add only a little rice and then remove and eat the broth. It's better to leave the broth behind, even if it's wasteful. Especially for middle-aged people vulnerable to obesity, ramen and rice are excessive carbohydrate intake in themselves.

After eating ramen, it is good to have a dessert that contains foods rich in potassium, which helps to eliminate sodium. Such foods include bananas and tomatoes.
