Symptoms

Symptoms of venous insufficiency include pain, cramping, fatigue, dull ache, restlessness in the legs, burning sensation, heaviness, and more. The diagnosis of varicose veins can be easily made through visual inspection and simple clinical assessment. However, for treatment of varicose veins, it is essential to perform Doppler ultrasound or venography to accurately identify the problematic area, and to confirm the presence or absence of deep vein abnormalities, which play the most important role in venous return in the legs.
Treatment
Not all patients with varicose veins in the legs necessarily require active treatment.
By changing lifestyle habits and wearing compression stockings, it is possible to prevent symptom worsening and expect improvement in symptoms.
In cases requiring aggressive treatment, procedures such as traditional surgical resection, sclerotherapy injections, recently developed endovenous closure using radiofrequency, or endovenous closure using laser may be performed.
Precautions
If you have varicose veins, you should put on compression stockings first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. At this time, the elasticity of the stockings should feel like a firm grip on the legs, and they should not be stretchable by hand when worn. You should also wear compression stockings during exercise or walking. Especially when sitting in one place for a long time or standing for a long time, you must wear them. After putting on compression stockings, always smooth out any wrinkles and keep your legs elevated with your knees straight to prevent wrinkles behind the knees even when sitting. You should continue wearing compression stockings until bedtime.
When lying down, keep your legs elevated above the heart level (about 15cm). This greatly helps reduce leg swelling. When your legs are especially tired (tingling, pain, and severe swelling), use a wall to elevate your legs as much as possible. Avoid standing or sitting in one place for extended periods. If you experience other symptoms such as vascular pain, consult a vascular disease specialist.
