Interest is focusing on 'prunes,' which are good for blood pressure management.
Eating salty foods frequently raises blood pressure and narrows blood vessels, increasing the risk of hypertension and other related diseases. To prevent this, it is necessary to reduce sodium intake while increasing potassium intake. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure by excreting sodium from the body through urine.
According to a report by Herald Economy on the 29th, potassium is known to be essential for blood pressure regulation, heart health, and supporting muscle and nerve functions. The recommended daily intake of potassium for Korean adults is 3,500 mg, and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a daily intake of 3,500 to 5,000 mg for the prevention and treatment of hypertension.
Although bananas are commonly thought of as foods high in potassium, there are many foods with even higher potassium content than bananas. Prunes (dried Western plums) are a prime example. The potassium content of prunes is 732 mg per 100 grams, which is about twice that of bananas at 355 mg.
In addition to prunes, various foods such as avocados (485 mg), potatoes (588 mg), pumpkin (412 mg), sweet potatoes (375 mg), and red beans (1333 mg) are rich in potassium. These foods effectively promote the excretion of sodium and help prevent hypertension.
Especially, potatoes have recently attracted attention at the American Society for Nutrition Annual Meeting, where research results were presented indicating that a high-potassium diet is important for preventing hypertension and diabetes. The researchers advised that eating baked potatoes with the skin is more effective for potassium intake than eating French fries.
Meanwhile, reducing salty foods and consuming potassium-rich foods that help eliminate sodium are key to healthy blood pressure management.
