October, when the full autumn begins, is 'Breast Cancer Prevention Month'.
Breast cancer is a disease with a high prevalence among Korean women.
Among celebrities, there is broadcaster Seo Jung-hee. She has openly shared her diagnosis of breast cancer, frequently posting photos on social media of herself receiving treatment at the hospital and of herself shaving her head during chemotherapy.
Meanwhile, I am calmly accepting the cancer and sharing the process of overcoming it step by step.
In fact, breast cancer has a high prevalence among Korean women.
According to recent statistics, as of 2021, out of 133,800 new female cancer patients, 21.5%, or 28,720 individuals, were diagnosed with breast cancer.
More than one in five new female cancer patients have breast cancer.
Therefore, the Korean Breast Cancer Society has designated October as Breast Cancer Prevention Month and is actively promoting breast cancer screening and raising awareness about the disease.
The Pink Ribbon Campaign is one of them. It is a campaign to promote proper understanding of breast cancer and the importance of regular check-ups. Actors Kim Tae-hee and Go Ara have served as ambassadors for the Pink Ribbon campaign.
Breast cancer can be particularly prevented through regular screenings compared to other cancers. In Korea, women over 40 can receive free screenings every two years.
Regular check-ups are especially important if there is a family history, because the genetic probability is relatively high.
If two or more relatives within three generations and within one degree of kinship have had breast cancer, it is advisable to undergo additional genetic testing. This is because BRCA gene mutations can be a cause of breast cancer.
The BRCA gene suppresses uncontrolled cell division and induces the death of abnormal cells in our body, but when mutations occur, these functions are impaired, leading to the development of malignant tumors.
Having a BRCA gene mutation increases the risk of developing not only breast cancer but also ovarian and pancreatic cancers.
Professor Yoon Kwang-hyun of the Department of Surgery at Gangneung Asan Hospital Cancer Center stated, "Having a BRCA gene mutation does not necessarily mean that breast cancer will develop, but if a mutation is present, the risk of developing breast cancer can increase from 40% up to a maximum of 80%."
Professor Kang Young-jun of the Breast and Thyroid Surgery Department at Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University, emphasized maintaining healthy lifestyle habits for breast cancer prevention. He stated, "There are no particularly good or bad foods, but it is important to avoid high-calorie, greasy foods and overeating," adding, "Obesity has been clearly identified as a risk factor, so maintaining a healthy weight is essential."
