Eating apples and bananas regularly can significantly help manage blood pressure levels and extend 'healthy lifespan.' A joint research team from Dalian Medical University in China announced that their study results showed that apples and bananas, in particular, can lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients and increase healthy lifespan.

According to research findings, eating one apple or banana 3 to 6 times a week can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of death from all causes by about 40%. In particular, consuming these two fruits together has been shown to significantly contribute to 'healthy longevity.' However, people who frequently enjoy pears, grapes, and pineapples do not experience the same level of benefits as those who eat apples and bananas.

Fiber from apples and bananas helps manage hypertension. Flavonoids and phenolic compounds in apples have antioxidant and anticancer effects, and are good for dieting and relieving constipation. Additionally, the skin of apples is rich in unique polyphenol components that help prevent skin aging. Bananas contain various vitamins, minerals, and protective compounds. The abundant potassium in bananas helps lower blood pressure. Bananas also promote gut health and produce beneficial physiological effects throughout the body.

The research team analyzed data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States. Additionally, a survey on usual dietary habits was conducted with 2,480 hypertension patients. The follow-up data collected 10 years later showed that 658 participants had died. The study results indicated that even after accounting for various health factors such as gender, age, race, education level, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, individuals who consumed apples or bananas 3 to 6 times a week had a significantly lower risk of death from all causes.

Associate Professor Yaoyao Yao from Dalian Medical University, the co-first author of the study (physiology), said, "Fruits can affect blood sugar levels and other metrics, and it is important to note that consuming more than 3 to 6 apples or bananas per week does not provide additional benefits." He added, "It is also advisable not to neglect the intake of other fruits. For hypertensive patients, moderate consumption of avocados, strawberries, and tomatoes can help lower blood pressure."
