"Recovery rate 7%"... Ahn Jae-wook, half of his head shaved, undergoes surgery for 'this condition'

Actor Ahn Jae-wook recalled the time when he underwent brain surgery due to subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Ahn Jae-wook said, "Ten years ago in the United States, I collapsed due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent brain surgery. According to the doctor, the probability of recovering normally without any aftereffects of physical disability is less than 7%."

The most common cause of cerebral aneurysm rupture... Manage hypertension and hyperlipidemia if present.

According to reports at the time, Ahn Jae-wook experienced severe headaches and vomiting while having dinner in Las Vegas, USA, where he was taking a break. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, diagnosed with subarachnoid hemorrhage, and underwent surgery the next day.

The meninges surrounding the brain are classified into three types: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. Among these, the arachnoid mater is the middle membrane, and the space between it and the pia mater is called the subarachnoid space. Bleeding that occurs in this subarachnoid space is called subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The cause is mostly the rupture of a cerebral aneurysm. Symptoms include sudden severe headache, nausea, and vomiting, similar to what Ahn Jae-wook experienced. When subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs, about 1 in 10 patients die before reaching the hospital, and approximately 50% die within a month, making it a very dangerous condition.

If subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs due to a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, the skull is opened to expose multiple parts of the brain, and the aneurysm neck is clipped with a clip to prevent rebleeding. This procedure maintains normal blood flow while isolating the aneurysm from blood supply. For prevention, cerebral aneurysm embolization is also performed. The swollen area is blocked by weaving platinum coils, similar to inflating a balloon.

To prevent subarachnoid hemorrhage, it is important to pay attention to and control risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Reducing excessive intake of sodium and saturated fats that raise blood pressure, along with consistent exercise for about 30 minutes a day, is also important.

Especially if you have already experienced a ruptured cerebral aneurysm once, there is a higher risk of rupture occurring in other cerebral blood vessels, so you should pay extra attention to management and not forget regular check-ups.
