24 cases of mass food poisoning at elementary, middle, and high schools in Namwon... Norovirus detected in kimchi

In the midst of the hot and humid rainy season, which requires more thorough attention to food hygiene to prevent food poisoning, a group food poisoning incident related to school meals has occurred in the Namwon area of North Jeolla Province.

According to Namwon City and others, as of the 6th, 1,024 students and staff members from 24 elementary, middle, and high schools in the area showed symptoms suspected of food poisoning.

Currently, there is a suspicion of norovirus food poisoning. The test results for a student showing symptoms of food poisoning detected 'Norovirus G2,' indicating a suspected case of food poisoning. In the school where the food poisoning occurred, norovirus was also detected in some of the kimchi supplied collectively.

Norovirus food poisoning is the most common waterborne and foodborne infectious disease in our country, occurring when consuming food contaminated with norovirus.

The average incubation period is 24 to 48 hours, but symptoms can also appear within 18 to 78 hours or within 12 hours. The main symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, headache, and high fever. Most recover spontaneously without special treatment, but dehydration can occur, so fluid replacement therapy is administered. If vomiting or diarrhea is severe, additional medication may be taken.

Tip. How to prevent norovirus food poisoning

  1. 1. Wash seafood with tap water and cook at a core temperature of 85°C for at least 1 minute.
  2.

2. Boil water before drinking and wash hands with soap under running water for at least 30 seconds.

3. Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly under running water before consumption.

Clothes stained with vomit should be washed separately at a high temperature (above 50°C).

5. Always disinfect vomit and surrounding areas

6. Always close the toilet lid and flush after using the bathroom or vomiting.

7. Disinfect surfaces such as bathroom door handles, faucets, and handrails

8. Do not cook when experiencing symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea

9. Refrain from contact with norovirus-infected individuals and wear a mask

10. Rest for at least 2 days after symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea have stopped.
