Matcha (抹茶) is a finely ground powder made from tea leaves, characterized by a slightly bitter yet deep flavor. It is made from the same tea leaves as green tea (綠茶) and has a similar aroma and color, but the production methods differ. Green tea is made by drying the tea leaves, while matcha involves steaming the harvested leaves, drying them, and then grinding them into powder. Green tea is brewed by steeping the dried leaves in hot water, but matcha is consumed by mixing the powder directly into water, allowing for greater intake of nutrients. Let's explore the health benefits of matcha.

Rich in antioxidant ingredients

Matcha is rich in antioxidants. Among them, it contains a high amount of catechins, a type of polyphenol, which helps prevent various diseases such as cancer and heart disease, and also has anti-aging effects. According to the American health media 'Healthline', the antioxidants in matcha prevent cell damage and inhibit the accumulation of carbohydrates as fat in the body, providing a dieting benefit.

◇Stress Relief

Matcha has a stress-relieving effect. The amino acid L-theanine contained in matcha influences brain neurotransmitters, improving tension and anxiety caused by stress.

◇Brain function enhancement

Matcha improves brain function. A research team from the U.S. National Library of Medicine measured the brain function of people who consumed 4g of matcha and a control group who took a placebo. The analysis showed that people who consumed matcha had improved attention, memory, and reaction time compared to the control group. The research team concluded that the caffeine content in matcha stimulates the central nervous system, thereby enhancing cognitive function.

◇Skin Improvement

Matcha is rich in vitamin C, making it effective for skin elasticity and anti-aging. Vitamin C also has moisturizing and whitening effects, helping to keep the skin clear and bright.

Depression Relief

Matcha has a mood-enhancing effect. According to a study published in the journal 'Nutrients,' matcha powder activates the brain's dopamine system, producing effects similar to antidepressants.

High caffeine content, caution advised

However, matcha contains a high amount of caffeine, so intake should be properly regulated. Matcha contains about 19 to 45 mg of caffeine per gram, which is higher than green tea, which contains about 11 to 25 mg per gram. A cup of matcha beverage contains approximately 38 to 176 mg of caffeine, so it is advisable to consume it within the daily recommended caffeine intake of 400 mg for adults set by the Korea Food & Drug Administration. For those sensitive to caffeine, it is better not to consume it late in the day.

====================

Matcha latte also tastes good.

I like matcha, but when I make a latte

I don't eat it because I dislike sugar.

In the past, when I used to eat things like traditional Japanese sweets,

I think I eat a lot of matcha.

I used to eat Boseong green tea powder before.

Matcha has even better effects.
