10 Reasons for Male Erectile Dysfunction

 

Erectile dysfunction is a common symptom that men experience at least once. According to the Korean Society of Men’s Health, 49.8% of men over the age of 40 experience erectile dysfunction. It is also estimated that there are over 2 million patients with erectile dysfunction in Korea. Recently, according to a report by the American men's health media outlet 'Men's Health,' Daniel Brison, a urology doctor and advisory board member of the American pharmaceutical company OneMD Nutrition, stated, "Erectile dysfunction can be a simple physical problem, but it also occurs due to various reasons such as lifestyle, stress, and side effects of medication," and he listed "10 reasons that cause erectile dysfunction." We will take a closer look at the 10 reasons for erectile dysfunction introduced by him.

 

1️⃣ The burden of pregnancy planning = When trying to conceive with a partner feels like a duty during sexual activity, it can lead to erectile dysfunction. If sex is perceived not as enjoyment but as something to be done, psychological stress increases. In such cases, reducing stress and creating a comfortable atmosphere through communication with the partner can be helpful.

 

2️⃣Relationship with a new partner = Many people experience erectile dysfunction during their first sexual encounter with a new partner. This is mostly caused by tension and sexual anxiety. It is important to stay relaxed and build trust through sufficient foreplay.

 

3️⃣ Use of certain medications = Drugs such as blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers can cause side effects of erectile dysfunction. These medications can induce blood vessel constriction or hormonal changes, reducing the ability to maintain an erection. If erectile dysfunction is suspected to be caused by medication, it is necessary to consult a doctor to consider alternative drugs or adjusted dosages.

 

4️⃣ Sleep deprivation = Sleep deprivation causes erectile dysfunction. Lack of sleep lowers testosterone levels, which reduces libido. In particular, chronic sleep deprivation disrupts the body's natural rhythm, leading to a decrease in testosterone levels that should normally increase in the morning and during the day.

 

5️⃣An unbalanced diet = an unhealthy diet is another cause of erectile dysfunction. In particular, foods high in sugar and fat interfere with blood circulation, reducing blood flow to the penis. Conversely, a Mediterranean diet that includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish can help prevent erectile dysfunction.

 

Lack of exercise = Lack of exercise weakens cardiovascular health, leading to erectile dysfunction. Insufficient physical activity increases the risk of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, which impair blood circulation. To improve erectile dysfunction, it is recommended to engage in lower body strength exercises or walking.

 

7️⃣ Obesity = Obesity causes inflammation and stress, which negatively affect nerves and blood pressure. In particular, obesity lowers testosterone levels and leads to hormonal imbalances that cause erectile dysfunction. To maintain a healthy weight, it is important to consistently practice exercise and a balanced diet.

 

Overdrinking = Alcohol consumption promotes the secretion of hormones that constrict blood vessels, leading to hypertension. Hypertension stimulates blood vessels, reducing their elasticity and thickening the vessel walls. When blood vessels narrow, blood flow to the penis can be impaired, potentially causing erectile dysfunction.

 

Excessive masturbation = Masturbating frequently can lead to erectile dysfunction. After masturbation, a hormone called prolactin increases, which suppresses erectile ability and ejaculation. In particular, continuous masturbation takes more time for the body to recover from fatigue.

 

Stress and fatigue = Stress and fatigue negatively affect sexual activity. Stress increases cortisol levels and suppresses testosterone secretion, leading to erectile dysfunction.
