The older I get, the more my body aches and hurts... I need to block the 'four' things.

As people age, many complain of pain in various parts of their bodies, such as the knees, shoulders, and fingers. This is somewhat a natural part of aging. As these pains become routine after the age of 60 to 65, many rely on patches or painkillers. Why does widespread pain occur, and what can be done to prevent and manage it? Dr. Brandon Borden, a specialist in geriatrics at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, said, "It is very common for pain to develop in various parts of the body in old age. Especially chronic pain that occurs frequently in those over 65 reduces quality of life, makes daily activities difficult, and interferes with restful sleep."

Pain affects not only physical discomfort but also mental and emotional health. It increases stress and frustration, lowers motivation and activity levels, and causes fatigue. For this reason, there are suggestions that older adults should have their own pain management strategies. According to the Mayo Clinic News Network, the four main causes of widespread pain that typically occur after age 60 are degenerative changes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass).

As people age, their bodies are prone to degenerative changes. Cartilage covering the joints wears down and becomes damaged, making osteoarthritis more likely to occur. In particular, areas with frequent movement such as the knees, fingers, and spine are at higher risk of becoming stiff, sore, and painful. Additionally, aging causes changes in the bones and tissues surrounding the joints, leading to osteoarthritis and resulting in pain. If the immune system malfunctions and causes inflammation in the joints and surrounding tissues, it can lead to rheumatoid arthritis, causing suffering.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, weight management, stress relief, and quality sleep are important for improving lifestyle habits.

Pain may appear here and there due to muscle loss. As we age, physical activity decreases and muscles naturally weaken. Muscles play a role in protecting joints and assisting movement. When muscles decrease, the load on joints and bones increases, significantly raising the risk of pain. Various inflammatory diseases and tissue damage are also major causes of pain in old age. Chronic inflammation increases rapidly with age. Aging reduces the body's ability to recover and slows the regeneration of damaged tissues. As a result, even minor injuries may take a long time to heal or lead to chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia also occurs frequently in people over 60. Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain and soreness throughout the body, as well as fatigue. The exact cause of this condition has not yet been clearly identified. However, it is known to be closely related to stress, lack of sleep, and abnormalities in the nervous system. As aging progresses and bone density decreases, the risk of osteoporosis increases significantly. Bones can fracture easily even with minor impacts. Especially when compression fractures occur in the spine, persistent pain in the back and waist can be experienced.

How can we alleviate or eliminate such generalized body pain? It requires improving lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, proper weight management, stress relief, and sufficient sleep. Consistent exercise even as you age is very important for pain management. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and yoga put less strain on the joints. They help strengthen muscles and joints and improve flexibility. Gymnastics and stretching promote smooth blood circulation and loosen stiff muscles.

If severe pain persists... it is advisable to seek treatment at a geriatrics, orthopedics, or rheumatology clinic.

A balanced diet is also important. To reduce inflammation and maintain bone and muscle health, it is necessary to consume plenty of vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and vitamin D. Foods high in coffee and salt should be avoided as they lower bone density. Overweight or obesity increase the burden on joints and cause pain. Maintaining an appropriate weight can reduce joint stress and alleviate pain. Stress and lack of sleep are major factors that worsen pain. Anxiety should be reduced through meditation, deep breathing, or light walking. Maintaining regular sleep habits is also important for pain management.

If severe pain persists and interferes with daily life, you should promptly visit a hospital (orthopedics, rheumatology, geriatrics, etc.) for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. You may also receive physical therapy or seek help from a pain management clinic. Topical patches applied to the pain area are effective for temporary relief, but it is important to remember that they are not a fundamental solution. Chronic pain should be systematically treated with professional assistance.

Whole body pain associated with age is not entirely unavoidable. However, it can be sufficiently alleviated through proper management and lifestyle improvements. It is important to become sensitive to the warning signals sent by the body. Ignoring problems and passively accepting them is not advisable; early and proactive responses are crucial. Saying "Getting older naturally means more pain" and giving up is not the solution. Even older individuals must strive to maintain their health in order to lead a vibrant life.

==============

As I age, my body aches all over.

There are many people complaining of pain.

You can apply a patch or take painkillers to reduce the pain, but

Fundamental treatment is very important.

There is always a patch in the pillbox when I visit my parents' house.

There are different types, and now I think I am one of them.

It seems like they just put a patch on it first when they feel sick.

Fundamental treatment ~ Pain should not be left untreated
