If you take vitamins or mineral supplements within two hours after drinking coffee, you may not see their full effects. This is especially true for supplements containing vitamin D and iron.

 

The reason is caffeine found in coffee, black tea, and green tea. Caffeine interferes with the absorption of vitamin D and iron in the stomach. Vitamin D absorption receptors are secreted in the small intestine, and caffeine functions to block them. Iron, due to its tendency to bind well with caffeine, attaches to caffeine before being absorbed in the stomach and is excreted in the urine together. Caffeine can reduce the iron absorption rate by up to 80%.

 

Water-soluble vitamins such as vitamin B and C also require caution because they are affected by caffeine's diuretic effect. Water-soluble vitamins remain in the body only in the necessary amount and are excreted through urine.

 

The diuretic effect of caffeine can increase the amount of water-soluble vitamins excreted in urine. Minerals such as calcium are also nutrients excreted in urine, so intake of caffeine should be avoided along with them.

The time it takes for caffeine to enter and be expelled from the body is about two hours. It is recommended to wait at least two hours after drinking coffee before taking vitamin and mineral supplements.
