There is a specific reason to avoid certain foods when managing thyroid conditions. Some foods and supplements can interfere with the effectiveness of thyroid medication. In fact, some foods can even suppress thyroid function, so they should be consumed with caution.

 

☆☆Soybean (Soy)

For people with hypothyroidism, it is important to maintain healthy thyroid levels through consistent absorption of thyroid hormone medication. However, soybeans can interfere with this process. According to a study, consuming large amounts of soy or drinking soy milk immediately before or after taking thyroid hormone medication can affect drug absorption, emphasized Dr. Viramachane.

 

Having hypothyroidism does not mean you should completely avoid soybeans. It is important to regulate soy intake. It is advisable to avoid soybeans during the hours before and after taking medication. On the other hand, people with hyperthyroidism can include soybeans in their diet without any issues.

 

☆☆ Root vegetables=

You may have heard that it is better to avoid root vegetables when you have a thyroid condition. However, most root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and beets are healthy foods regardless of thyroid disease status. There is an exception. People with hypothyroidism should avoid 'cassava.' It is difficult to surpass this amount through regular meals, but seaweed supplements can contain up to 500 micrograms, so it is important to be aware of this.

 

Kelp is a natural source of iodine for people with hypothyroidism. However, those taking thyroid hormone medication should be cautious, as additional iodine intake can excessively increase thyroid hormone levels. For individuals with hyperthyroidism, excessive iodine can further stimulate thyroid activity, so supplement intake should be avoided.

Among vegetables that are good for health, cruciferous vegetables are considered the best. Cruciferous vegetables refer to those with four petals shaped like a cross, and they are superfoods rich in various nutrients. Commonly found on our dining tables are broccoli, cabbage, radish, rapeseed, kohlrabi, bok choy, and kale. However, people with hypothyroidism should be cautious when consuming cruciferous vegetables in large amounts. Especially when eaten raw, cruciferous vegetables can prevent the body from properly using iodine, thereby inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones.
