Why does eating this particular food make my face swell and cause gas in my stomach?

Even though I know that sweet foods, salty foods, and alcohol are not good for my body

Depending on what food you eat, the areas that swell or the bloating can vary. Eating sweet foods and sleeping can cause your face to swell the next day. Drinking alcohol can cause your entire body to swell. Additionally, eating salty foods can cause gas in the stomach, making daily life uncomfortable. Let's explore why these foods cause swelling and gas in the stomach.

Sugary foods → Causes facial swelling = Eating foods high in sugar such as bread, snacks, carbonated drinks, and processed juices raises insulin levels. Sugars increase insulin levels in the body. Insulin is a storage hormone that causes various organs, blood vessels, and lymphatic systems to store excess nutrients. The stored nutrients produce waste and toxins in each organ, disrupting circulation within the body. As a result, fluid circulation in the body also stagnates, leading to facial swelling.

▷Foods high in sodium → cause abdominal bloating = Eating foods high in sodium such as French fries, processed meats, and canned foods can cause the stomach to swell. According to a study by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, people who consumed high amounts of sodium experienced 27% more abdominal bloating than those who did not. Consuming more sodium promotes water retention and reduces digestion, which can lead to gas and bloating. Additionally, high-sodium or high-fat greasy foods can trigger irritable bowel syndrome. As a result, unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating may recur.

▷Alcohol → Causes overall body swelling = Drinking alcohol can cause facial swelling. Alcohol undergoes two metabolic reactions in the body. First, it is broken down in the liver by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) into acetaldehyde. This acetaldehyde then reacts with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ADH) and is converted into acetic acid. This substance dilates blood vessels, slowing blood flow. As a result, blood circulation becomes poor, leading to facial swelling. During this process, pimples may appear on the face or existing acne may worsen. To prevent facial swelling the day after drinking, it is advisable to drink plenty of water while consuming alcohol. Drinking water increases satiety, which can reduce alcohol intake. Additionally, water dilutes alcohol in the body, lowering the blood alcohol concentration.
