The tendinopathy known as "Dead Butt Syndrome" (Gluteal Tendinopathy), which appears in the buttock area, destroys or weakens the tendon tissue and often causes pain in the hip joint. According to the American health and medical media "MedicalXpress," Dead Butt Syndrome affects runners, dancers, skiers, as well as people who sit all day. Postmenopausal women going through menopause are also frequently affected by this condition.
According to Cleveland Clinic, dead butt syndrome occurs when some of the gluteal muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus) become weakened. It can happen when excessive pressure is applied to the tendons through physical activity or when the tendons are compressed due to an accident. It can also develop from a sedentary lifestyle with little activity, which leads to less use of the tendons. If weight increases, excessive pressure on the tendons can also cause this condition.
Initially, it causes pain in the lower back and muscles, and if the condition persists for a long time, it significantly reduces quality of life. The symptoms typically manifest as moderate hip pain. The pain occurs when climbing stairs or walking on inclined paths, lying on one's side or sleeping on the side, sitting for extended periods, or standing on one leg. You may also feel hip pain when getting out of bed in the morning. If these symptoms appear, you should suspect Dead Hip Syndrome. Diagnosis of this condition may require magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans or ultrasound examinations.
Correct your slouched posture and frequently change your sitting position... Stretching, yoga, and weightlifting are good for prevention.
If dead butt syndrome is left untreated, signs of aging such as chronic pain in the lower body may appear much earlier. Experiencing chronic pain every night can lead to sleep deprivation and suffering from severe fatigue and irritability. However, fortunately, with a little attention, this condition can be prevented or its symptoms alleviated.
According to Cleveland Clinic, repetitive activities that focus on the hips should be avoided. If you experience pain in the hip area during exercise such as running or hiking, you must rest. To strengthen the hips and prevent this condition in the long term, weightlifting (powerlifting), which is a muscle strengthening exercise, is recommended. Stretching and yoga are also good for maintaining lower body flexibility. Orthopedic specialist Dr. Robert Trasolini said, "Posture is more important than anything else. It’s good to change your sitting posture frequently during work or rest." He emphasized, "Sitting with a hunched back or slouching at your desk puts significant pressure not only on the lower back but also on the hip muscles."
If symptoms of dead butt syndrome have already started, you should stand up and move your body every 30 minutes at work or at home to delay or stop the symptoms. It is good to get up every hour to stretch and take a short walk of about 3-5 minutes. Doing so can help alleviate the symptoms. It is advisable to seek help from medical professionals for treatments such as manual therapy, massage, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, and appropriate exercise prescriptions.
