PTSD medication treatment process
Due to excessive workload and restructuring, I lost my job and was diagnosed with post-traumatic anxiety disorder as a result of the stress and aftereffects.
Among the three received treatments: medication therapy, psychological therapy, and self-care management.
Trying medication therapy.
Medications are most commonly used when a comorbid condition occurs alongside PTSD. For example, antidepressants are often prescribed when the patient appears to also be suffering from major depression. Similarly, antipsychotic drugs (such as haloperidol or aripiprazole) are used when psychotic symptoms are found together with PTSD.
Antidepressants can be effective treatments for PTSD, even in patients who are not also suffering from major depression. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most commonly recommended. Other available medications include mood stabilizers (e.g., valproic acid) and atypical antipsychotics (e.g., aripiprazole).
Various other medications are used for patients with PTSD. They are often used to target specific moods, thoughts, and behaviors that are part of or occur alongside PTSD episodes.
For example, to treat insomnia, doctors sometimes administer sedatives such as olanzapine and quetiapine (which are also used as antipsychotic medications), and sometimes use the same medications for mood instability and impulsivity, similar to mood stabilizers like valproate. In the case of nightmares, a drug that often proves effective is prazosin, which is more commonly used for hypertension.
The method of taking it is similar to taking regular medication: you can take it twice a day, in the morning and evening, with three meals a day. If your symptoms are severe, you want to recover quickly, or you are good at managing your condition, it is better to take it three times a day, including lunch.
