6 Symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension! Sharing 5 Causes too

6 Symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension!

1. I feel dizzy when I sit down and stand up! 2. I feel dizzy even when I stay still! 3. My vision suddenly goes dark!

4. Headache, stiff neck! 5. Difficult to urinate or defecate! 6. In severe cases, fainting!

* Five causes: neurological causes, endocrine causes, cardiovascular causes, medication factors, other causes

I have orthostatic hypotension.

When I lie down and then get up, it becomes very dark in front of me and I feel dizzy.

I often sit down quickly and lie down before I collapse.

I was tired even on Sunday the other day, and I took a nap that was kind of like a doze without actually sleeping.

The groom got up from the master bedroom upon hearing the children being scolded.

He experienced orthostatic hypotension, so he quickly sat down and lay face down.

It was so hard to spin around in circles for a while...

Honestly, a few years ago, I was so busy that I would sit in front of the computer for six hours, skipping lunch, and not even get up.

I finished my work, sent the work email, and stood up shouting "It's all done!"

For a moment, I felt dizzy and my vision went dark, and I almost collapsed, but I quickly grabbed the desk and barely avoided falling.

Really, at that time... Wow, this is why... I thought people could die from a concussion ㅠㅠ

What exactly is orthostatic hypotension?

Orthostatic hypotension refers to a condition where, after measuring blood pressure while lying down and then standing up, the blood pressure drops by at least 20 mmHg in systolic pressure or 10 mmHg in diastolic pressure within three minutes of standing.

Even during pregnancy, my systolic and diastolic blood pressure were within normal ranges, but they were on the lower end.

I sat down to measure accurately, but my blood pressure is naturally on the low side, and I also tend to have anemia.

You've probably heard that low blood pressure is more frightening than high blood pressure, right?

There are many accidents caused by falls due to orthostatic hypotension, so we really need to be careful.

Furthermore... they say there are no suitable medications or treatments available.

6 Symptoms of Orthostatic Hypotension! Sharing 5 Causes too

When looking at symptoms of orthostatic hypotension
When I stand up after sitting, I spin around in circles.
I feel dizzy even when I am just sitting still.
★ Suddenly, everything in front of my eyes goes dark.
★ Headache, stiff neck.
Difficulty in urinating and defecating.
In severe cases, it can lead to fainting.

There are many things that truly apply to me...

Then, what is the alternative cause of orthostatic hypotension?

1. Nervous system causes,

The autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure, and when there is a disorder in the autonomic nervous system, it can cause orthostatic hypotension, which is said to be a cause of anemia symptoms.

Additionally, due to damage to the central nervous system, autonomic nervous system function may be impaired, making blood pressure regulation difficult.

In the case of Parkinson's disease, the loss of dopamine-producing cells affects the autonomic nervous system, leading to orthostatic hypotension, and

Peripheral nerve damage such as diabetic neuropathy also impairs autonomic nervous system function, leading to orthostatic hypotension.

2. Endocrine causes

Adrenal insufficiency

If hormones are not properly secreted from the adrenal glands, fluid and electrolyte balance can be disrupted, leading to low blood pressure.

Edison disease

Due to decreased function of the adrenal cortex, the secretion of cortisol and aldosterone decreases, leading to reduced fluid retention and a potential drop in blood pressure.

Hypothyroidism

A deficiency of thyroid hormones lowers the metabolic rate, affecting blood pressure regulation, which can lead to orthostatic hypotension.

In my case, it's not related to endocrinology.

3. Cardiovascular causes

Heart failure

If the heart cannot pump enough blood, blood pressure may drop when standing up.

Heart failure patients generally have impaired blood circulation, making them more susceptible to orthostatic hypotension, so we need to be extra cautious.

• Arrhythmia

Irregular heartbeats can cause blood pressure to become unstable, and in particular, a sudden decrease in heart rate may lead to orthostatic hypotension.

My mom also sometimes feels dizzy and tired, and I think it's because she has arrhythmia...

I really have to tell you to be very careful ㅠㅠ

4. Medication factors

Diuretic

It reduces body fluids and lowers blood pressure, and blood pressure may drop sharply when standing up. Patients taking diuretics should especially be cautious of orthostatic hypotension.

Antihypertensive medication

Medications that lower blood pressure can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up. Especially when taking multiple types of antihypertensive drugs.

Orthostatic hypotension may occur due to drug interactions.

My mother has arrhythmia, hypertension medication... and she also has many causes of orthostatic hypotension.

• Antidepressants and painkillers

Certain antidepressants (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants) or painkillers (e.g., opioids) can affect the autonomic nervous system and cause orthostatic hypotension.

5. Other causes

• Prolonged lying down

If you lie in bed for a long period, blood can pool in the lower extremities, causing blood pressure to drop when standing up. This is common in patients who have been hospitalized for an extended period.

Orthostatic hypotension commonly occurs in patients.

• Aging

As people age, the function of the autonomic nervous system declines and the elasticity of blood vessels decreases, increasing the risk of orthostatic hypotension.

Why is it so sad to really grow old...

Dehydration

If body fluids are insufficient, blood pressure can drop. This can occur due to vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, etc., and especially in the elderly, dehydration is said to be one of the causes of orthostatic hypotension and orthostatic dizziness.

One of the reasons why you really need to drink water frequently.

Lack of lower body muscles

Even in cases of insufficient lower body muscles, orthostatic hypotension can occur because blood flow regulation is impaired.

It is said that tall people, with a long distance from the lower body to the heart and brain, are also well represented.

I think I might be related to this...

Orthostatic hypotension has no specific medication or treatment method, so we have to be as cautious as possible.

How to prevent orthostatic hypotension! Shall we find out?

Be careful not to sit for a long time without getting up, and when lying down and getting up, do so slowly as if rolling to the side.

The other day, just like me, when I suddenly stood up, I felt dizzy and nauseous due to orthostatic hypotension, and it became very difficult for me...ㅠㅠ

And regularly stretching and wearing compression stockings to prevent the stagnation of venous blood in the legs are also helpful.

Additionally, consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C.

Drinking enough fluids and consuming almonds rich in vitamin E are also helpful.

Garlic is also said to help improve low blood pressure due to its scordinin component.

Ginseng, carrots, cheese, spinach, and bananas are also good for improving blood flow, so please keep that in mind.

And as I mentioned earlier, if the lower body muscles are weak, it can be difficult to stand up properly.

It is recommended to strengthen the lower body muscles through exercises such as squats, walking, cycling, and stair climbing.

I explained the symptoms, causes, and prevention methods of orthostatic hypotension.
