An accident occurred where a man in his 50s, diving in the Jeju sea, hit his head on the bottom and sustained serious injuries.

According to the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters on the 1st, at around 2 p.m. yesterday, Mr. A in his 50s hit his head on the bottom while diving in water about 1.5 meters deep at Wolryeong Port in Halla-eup, Jeju City. People nearby immediately rescued Mr. A, who had lost consciousness and was floating on the water surface after the accident. When the 119 emergency team arrived, Mr. A's consciousness had recovered, but he was reported to be experiencing cervical (neck bone) pain and paralysis of his limbs.

When diving accidents actually occur, they often lead to serious situations such as paralysis. What is the reason for this?

If you dive incorrectly and hit your head on the bottom, the lower cervical vertebrae may fracture, leading to spinal cord injury. The neck is composed of seven thin and small bones that support the heavy head, making it susceptible to damage even from minor impacts. Injury to the cervical vertebrae and spinal cord can disrupt nerve signals between the brain and body, potentially resulting in severe conditions such as paralysis, sensory loss, and consciousness disturbances. In fact, about 70% of paralysis cases are caused by trauma, with diving accidents accounting for a very high proportion of 9%. People with pre-existing conditions such as herniated discs or spinal stenosis should be especially cautious.

Experts advise that you must always check the water depth before diving.

Diving from a shallow depth can easily cause a collision with the bottom and result in a broken neck, so diving should be avoided in areas where the water depth is less than 4 meters. To prevent injuries, warm-up exercises before diving are also essential. Light aerobic exercises such as marching in place are appropriate, and stretching should be gradually increased in intensity, focusing on the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, waist, knees, legs, and ankles. After diving, it is recommended to take a hot shower or apply a warm compress, then rest to recover from fatigue.

Meanwhile, individuals with cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, or those with hypertension caused by diabetes or obesity, must absolutely avoid diving.

When diving and tilting the head downward, blood pressure rises suddenly, causing blood to rush to the brain and potentially leading to a cerebral hemorrhage.
