Coffee is a popular beverage enjoyed by many people and serves as an auxiliary means to help wake up. The caffeine in coffee induces an alertness effect that drives away drowsiness.

 

However, people sensitive to caffeine may experience side effects such as palpitations or trembling hands, beyond just preventing drowsiness when drinking coffee.

 

Conversely, there are people who feel more tired after drinking coffee. What could be the cause of this? Based on sources such as the American health and medical media 'Healthline,' we explored the reasons behind this.


According to nutrition experts, this is because caffeine can cause a 'caffeine crash.' A caffeine crash is a phenomenon where fatigue is felt after caffeine consumption.

 

Caffeine is a stimulant that increases activity in the brain and nervous system. The effects of caffeine on individuals vary; for some people, excessive stimulation occurs, leading to an increased heart rate (heart rate), heightened anxiety, palpitations, trembling, and other symptoms, which in turn increase calorie expenditure and cause fatigue.

 

Caffeine binds to adenosine receptors in the brain, temporarily blocking the function of adenosine. Since adenosine is a substance that causes fatigue and drowsiness, caffeine intake helps to ward off sleep. However, when the caffeine wears off, adenosine resumes its original function, which can lead to a caffeine crash.

Caffeine crashes are also affected by the amount and quality of sleep from the previous day, anxiety levels, sugar intake, and water consumption. So, what are the ways to prevent fatigue caused by coffee?

First, it is important to drink enough water. If you have drunk coffee, you should drink the same amount of water. For example, if you have had two cups of coffee, you should also drink two cups of water.

 

Avoiding the addition of sugar to coffee as much as possible is also a way to reduce caffeine crashes. Adding sugar causes blood sugar and insulin levels to spike rapidly and then drop, which increases fatigue.

 

To eliminate fatigue, it is most important to maintain a proper sleep duration of 7 to 8 hours per day. Essentially, if you do not get enough sleep, it is difficult to properly relieve fatigue even if you drink coffee the next day. In the morning, it is good to open the curtains to let in natural light and get enough sunlight.

 

Sensitivity to caffeine varies greatly from person to person, but on average, avoiding caffeine intake starting six hours before bedtime is also a way to ensure restful sleep and prevent severe caffeine crashes.
